Another mini-meet!
Babel17 Posted Jan 14, 2001
Sorry, EV. Is it really that bad?
i think I have it again. I had it over Xmas, and I think I have caught it again. Pesky germs, you just can't see them creeping up on you and invading your personal space.
As for wakes Wumbeevil, there was one a few months ago. I hoped Old Amos was going to be the first, but he's still going strong. For now.

No, really, I'm okay, I don't want to make a fuss.

Hot Toddy for you, before you go to bed, I think.

Babel17 Posted Jan 14, 2001
Would it help if I said I had the cold too, and probably had it first?
*thinks about this for a moment and then realises what he has just said*
Er, probably not.

Gee and to think I used to get every thing that was going in the years after I had glandualr fever, because my immune system was shot and now all the people I spent last Saturday night with have come down with something and I'm fine.
I suspect the beer. As the coke seems to have had no ill effect on me whatsoever.

As I believe you were looking for wee write ups of pubs in Glasgow, other than my thing on the Uisghe Beatha, here are a couple more.
The Hogshead, On the roundabout at the end of Woodlands Road. This is an old school that was rebuilt into a fairly standard Hogshead chain pub. However, it has a beer "garden" out the front which, when the weather is fair (two days in May) is crammed to the gunwhales with sun seekers. There is a lamentable lack of beer "gardens" in the West End of Glasgow which accounts for this popularity.
My best memory of this "garden" was one August when I had arranged to transport an old sofa from Park Circus (where it was being thrown out) to my residence at the time, just of the roundabout at the end of Woodlands Road. The three of us who were transporting it agreed, as we reached Woodlands Road, that we were a bit hot, and in need of refreshment. Hence, we decided to pop into the Hogshead for a quick drink. So we wandered into the "garden", confusing the punters, and plonked the sofa by the railings. One of us was then dispatched to get in a round of, as it was sunny, and we had a sofa, G and Ts.
Two hours later, the bloke we had got the sofa from came looking for us, as we had never returned and found us happily ensconced on the sofa with a small group hovering near by, hoping they could get the sofa when we left. Four hours after that it started to spit with rain and we felt that it would be best to get the sofa home while we still could. The looks we got as we picked it up and walked out with it made it all worth while. Well that and the Gin.
Jinty McGintys, Ashton Lane, just off Byres Road. This is an Oirish pub. It has Hurling shirts on the walls, quotes from James Joyce and the like scattered liberally and the toilets are named in Gaelic. However, it also has a beer "garden". This is tiny, but was the only known one in the West End for long enough. Hence it rapidly overflowed in good weather and people would spill into the lane. And, in a great display of sense, the police never arrest anyone for standing in the Queen's Highway and drinking. Hence, even though it is small, and very Oirish, it is still well worth a visit, especially if you like Guiness.

A big hello to all the pestilant people. (There follows a bout of extreme smugness). All that Gin must have done me the power of good, as I have escaped unharmed by all the germs that are doing the rounds at the mo.
I look on it as compensation for my years as a student when my immune system took a leave of absense for five years and I started a collection of various victorian ailments (pleurisy was my favourite - that was LOTS of fun). I was working my way up to the Black Death, but it was very rare and I couldn't get hold of it.
A big Aww Bless to everyone feeling poorly at the moment. Believe me, this is one person who knows what it's like to be ill. Alcohol doesn't work as a cure, by the way, THEY lied.

Good anecdotes Munchkin - thanks for starting off the pub guide! I must think of a couple too. Just spoke to Ardzil everyone - he's gonna come down to the Printworks at 7 on Wednesday. I'll be there with Anne from 5ish. Should be fun!
Now - so far, here are the ideas - apologies if I've missed anyone out and, of course, other ideas are still welcome....
Babel 17 - How hard is the Glasgow hard man? Rab C Nesbitt v Versace!
(possible video with vox pops - may need 'extras' - volunteers?!)
Munchkin - a video tour featuring random facts about Glasgow's West End (recorded already)
Spiny - Glasgow Curry guide (with the help of the rest of us?)
Underground Caroline (humourous video guide to the Glasgow Underground or Clockwork Orange) *Ardzil knows some useful facts about this
Ardzil - tour of some of the more out-of-the-way Glasgow tourist spots in his van (photomontage?)
DD&FC - audio love story (with photomontage of top 10 romantic spots in Glasgow - currently seeking DD&FC body doubles!)
Dr E Vibenstein - Glasgow bands guide (virtual CD player with info and music from 6 bands - past and present)
Wumbeevil - Babelfish dictionary/phrasebook: English/Glasgwegian (with sound files)
Plus video reciting McGonagall poem in a variety of locations
TheRealScottAdams/Kaila Tharsdatter - guide to Glasgow subculture (eg comic bookshops etc... possibly done visually through Glasgow monopoly board or the like?)
Lost in Scotland - photomontage of Lost lost in front of a variety of key Glasgow landmarks (Brenmac is compiling list and will also feature in guide, giving background to the buildings - in vamp costume)
Brenmac - see above (he'll also introduce us to the Scottish vampyre society - video/photomontage)
Jamie - possibly compiling the pub guide (made up of all our recommendations) haven't asked you this yet, Jamie!
Should be brilliant!

Pub Guide - I've made a start on it. See http://www.h2g2.com/A508501 for the list so far. It's fairly small at the moment, and biased towards the west end, as I tend to stick to what I know.
Also done, yet another guide to Uisige Beatha (http://www.h2g2.com/A508510) and my handy-dandy guide to surviving Glaswegen transport (http://www.h2g2.com/A508673). Suggestions etc. welcome. Toodle pip.
