hey - you lot are scaring me. i haven't heard any of this stuff....i think. how bout doing something everyone knows? last song i heard this morning was Starman by David Bowie....how bout that?

The trouble with a Choral Society singing Starman by David Bowie is that it sounds awful when done with 100 voices. It's very difficult to get that number of people to sing exactly together. Also the "average accent" you get from that number of singers makes it sound very bland. Starman is just about performable, but most popular music is far to difficult rhythmically for an amateur choir. Try getting a choir to sing an Abba song, for example. The off-beat rhythms really confuse the average choir member. This why choral stuff tends to be less rhythmic and relies more on beautiful harmonies to make it sound good.

Not Panicing Yet, you could certainly do yourself a favour and listen to Fauré's Requiem, but you will have to listen to appreciate it. It's not enough to have it on in the background. Borrow a CD off someone, sit and listen to it. You'll be deeply moved.

ok - I'll see who i know who can lend it too me. though i've heard chiors doing ABBA and apart from the over pronunciation it wasn't too bad. leave it up to Agnieta and Aannafried i agree.
i know exactly what you mean bout the accents - i once heard a chior doing a song from calamity jane and they sang really posh and it sounded AWFUL!!!!! my chior teacher always went on at ua for sining with broad northern irish accents too - yuck!
have youi heard ther Rythem of Life? sorry i can't spell it, but we did it in school a couple of years ago and it tured out great. and it's got rythem.

That is pretty good. But when you put it in a concert next to Zadok the Priest people get a bit worried.

Plus I think we should do Verdi's Requiem too.

The best thing about Zadok the Priest is
that it's by Handel. The second-best thing
is that it's pretty short, if I'm thinking of
the right piece. But if you're going to do
Handel, aren't there more tuneful pieces
like some of the Chandos Anthems? Or even
his Saint Cecelia Day piece, which has a
trumpet piece with the words "The trumpet's
loud clangor excites us to arms..." As the
U.S. President gears up for war against Iraq,
it's quite timely--as would Haydn's "Mass in
Time of War," for that matter.

Verdi's "Requiem" is not a piece for a small
chorus. If you do it all, you need a lot of
singers. Do we have enough?

why don't we do a concert so we can do them all anmd any others that come along?
