Ours is cooked in a military base at 4:oo AM and then kept warm until lunchtime

And sometimes they make Sauerbraten, with raisins in, and a few days later another beef dish that we find an occasional raisin in... I refuse to eat there! although their muffins are good

What's sauerbraten? Sounds destincly Germanic!!

It's a roast made of beef that'S rolled up. If done properly, it's marinated for at leas three days in a sour marinade with wine first. My mother makes it for Christmas. What the canteen serves is nought but a pale imitation.

That actually sound most tasty - your Mum's - not the canteen's.

I always remember school dinners and how they used to ruin everything....

yes, they tend to do that - I wish they'd just cook things everyone hates anyway and not spoil one's appettite!

I was pleasantly surprised how good some of the mess food could be in the RAF. I'd been out doing a patrol while on Gate Guard one time and found a load of large mushroom at the back of the mess. The cook said they were perfectly edible, so he did them for us with breakfast. You don't get much fresher food than that.

I may be going mushroom hunting later, the weather's perfect for it!

My grandfather joined the navy because he said their food was best.

I think I'm becoming addicted to mushrooms - I'm sure they are the food of the gods!

I wouldn't go shouting about it, but I think Mushrooms are even better than (don't tell that to the lovers fan club, or I'm dead meat!)
