The end of an era....
Posted Jul 10, 2001
So having tried my best to repress the memories of 12 hour shifts for over 6 years now, they are finally coming back to haunt me. (at least those were 4 hours overtime tagged onto an 8 hour shift, should the work be there to be carried out, now in a place that no longer exists since they made everyone redundant a few months ago)
I am now into the last 90 minutes of my last ever Nightshift (9.25 hrs), I have completed my last ever Back (7.25 hrs) and Dayshifts (8.25 hrs). So long old friends. I may be missing you very soon.
As of 7am BST that is it, for at 7pm BST I start NIGHTSHIFT (12.25 hrs). Please note the distinction by the use of capitalisation for no longer will I refer to my shifts in the lowercase. I scream their names, because they make me scream!
I apologise to everyone who has had to listen to me bemoan about their impending arrival, but I have to get this off my chest. You who lurk and read my journal entries all know I despise my work, and probably think why don't I get another job. Simple. I cannot afford to. Can you imagine how frustrated I would get by losing 1/3rd of my pay and all my time off, not to mention I doubt if I would have time to get on here. And that is the main thing, because this place is all that keeps me going.
RIP for the is just around the corner to make you a of your former self.

Flobble! (no vooning, no energy)

So. London, eh?
Well, what can be said that others haven't already?
It was a great weekend, one I was looking forward to imensely, and I wasn't dissapointed.
Arrived on time. 17.40(Thank you train company)
OP called me about 20 minutes out of Kings X to say he was just leaving to meet me. I decided to stand near the entrance to the underground so I could look out for him, but true to form he fooled me completely by appearing from the opposite direction.
Having been in contact with a few others, we decided to head to the pub they were in to meet them. Suffice to say many beers were consumed.
I finally met Shazz, TM and the Dutch contingency, then Mina & Galaxy Babe arrived with Mark, Peta & Abi in tow. That was cool.
OP and I finally staggered back to his place, having been thrown out the pub at closing time, along with everyone else. Only problem with the pub was it was stifflingly hot, no air movement. Whew.
Saturday morning saw us bleary eyed and heading off to get some food. We headed towards town on the tube, but got off at Camden. Finally fullfilled another lifelong ambition by going round Camden market.
Time was marching on, so we hot footed it up to the meeting point outside All-Sait's church, next to Broadcasting House, where we met the Dutch, EV, Lis, Menza, Blubottle, Joanna and many more.
The 'Experience' was interesting. Much hilarity and taking the Michael ensued throughout the 1.5 hour tour, (plus I think the contingency managed to clear the shelves of all HHGttG Series videos!)
Then it was decision time. What pup to retire to before heading to the chosen venue for the evening.
OP, EV, LiS & myself headed to an Irish pub, consumed a few fints and talked comedy for an hour or two, then weaved our way to the final venue, to be greeted by a pub full of people shouting "Where have you lot been? We were getting worried!"
Many more familiar names had faces put to them as the evening went on, and I made a number of new friends (hunt the photos)
Eventually we got thrown out of there when it closed. I was the last person out, to much cheering! And OP, Pegasus and myself propped each other up as we headed off to catch a bus back to OP's.
After what seems like too few hours sleep (It was. I woke up about 6/7am, stinking headache ) a call for coffee went up and the tree of us dragged our sorry selves to the nearest purveyor of hot coffee. If you happen to have seen 3 zombies on your travels in Nth London, chances are it was us.
So finally we headed back into town to Kings X and my train home, to be met by EV, Mina & partner, & GB. GB was heading home too, and luck was with us, cos she managed to get a seat on my train, which happened to be going through where she needed to get to. I should have slept on the train, but couldn't.
I got home at 6pm. I should have gone to bed for a couple of hours. I didn't. So now you see me posting from w**k. It's 3.50am. I have been awake for about 21 hours and still have another 6 to go before blessed bed takes my weary frame.
Was it worth it? You better believe it!
Finally special thanks to the Italics one and all for a great time, OP for the floor, Pegasus for lending an ear to a drunk Scot, GB for some gossip making photos and BaldBloke, Zed & Coely for making up the rest of our quiz team. (1 point short of a prize maybe next time, if I'm allowed out again) and finally the rest of the folks who turned up and made the evening what it was.
all round.
I loved every minute of it.
~oxo~

Londinium

Off down to London tomorrow.
Leave house 11.55am, walk to station.
Train to Edinburgh at 12.16pm,
then train to London at 1.00pm.
It says it should only take 4hrs 40 mins.
Therefore, I should be in London at 5.40pm.
For once, I wish there are no delays.
I come back on Sunday.
12.00 pm train from London.
The time in between, I hope to have met
plenty of good people. Some old friends,
others as yet unmet. We shall see.
No doubt there will be photos.
Enjoy your weekend,
whoever and wherever you are.
J.
