TWISTER!!!!
Posted Oct 22, 2000
As I write, the place where I live is under a tornado warning - that doesn't mean that a tornado might happen (that's a tornado watch), but that a tornado has been sighted, in this case about 40 miles to the south and headed north, i.e. this way. Now, for a bloke from London, this is a pretty scary thing, especially as there's no storm cellar here! When I was growing up in Great Britain, I thought that it must be the best place in the world to live - no earthquakes, no hurricanes (er, anyone tell that to Michael Fish? ), no volcanoes, no tornados, no poisenous or carnivorous animals. I can hear some very scary sounding thunder, and looking out of the window there's a vicious lightning show going on. I'm not afraid to say that I'm more than a little frightened right now . I'm gonna go hide in the bath and cover myself with whatever I can find.

Wishing

A couple of days ago I borrowed (no, really - I'm taking it back tomorrow) a used collection of Squeeze videos, and as I was watching it today I was reminded that if I had three wishes, one of them would be that I'd like to be able to play piano like Jools Holland. Secondly, I'd like this body restored to perfect health because bits of it seem to be wearing out with alarming regularity as I get older. Thirdly, I'd like a 20% share of the next $50,000,000 lottery payout.

Duality
Posted Sep 15, 2000
I think I may finally be getting a handle on the Zen principle of avoiding duality. Yesterday I heard Tuvok say to Kes "To understand the light, there has to be dark, for without the dark, how can you recognise the light?"
Why does one need to be able to recognise the light? If it's there and if it serves its purpose, does it need to be acknowledged and understood? Can it not be just accepted? I thought that "acceptance of what is" was a fundamental Vulcan priciple. If you can do the Buddhist thing of "becoming one with the {whatever}", you can understand its very essence, so you don't need its opposite to be able to know it.

Harrumph!

I think that match manufacturers should be compelled by law to make the top and bottom of the matchbox easily identifiable. I have to go now. There are about 240 matches on the floor that I have to pick up. Poo.

Weather here, wish you were beautiful

I don't know about you, but I'm having a blast here at h2g2. It's everything that the internet should be, everything that Lord Reith wanted the BBC to do - to educate, inform, and entertain. I've been educated and informed by several of the Guide entries and forum threads, and I've had a lot of fun in the forums too. I've asked some questions and had most of them answered, and I've answered a few myself. I've vented my spleen at one or two posts, and got a few things off my chest. I find that writing to someone, or being involved in a written discussion about a subject usually helps to clarify my thoughts on it. I've made some good friends in the discussion groups I've been involved with over the past year or two, and I'm sure that in the fullness of time the same will happen here. I'm mighty glad to be here with all you good folks.... deep joy.
