See that 0.2" of rain yesterday? It all came down in about 15 minutes. Know when most of that 15 minutes was? In the time it took me to get off the bus and walk home 
And on the one Sunday when when I didn't get a lift home as I usually do 
I was absolutely drenched when I got in. Normally I take a shower when I get home, after having been in a building with no a/c for more than 10 hours and doing a very physical job which sometimes involves sugary liquids (sticky). Didn't need to last night. I just disrobed and towelled myself off, I was that soaked.
Not long afterwards the rain stopped.

Scorchio number nine, and a big one, but thanks to the very low humidity, the heat index was only a degree higher, thankfully. I heard a local weather forecaster say that in the 44,000+ days that weather readings have been taken in Austin, only seven have been hotter than yesterday. At least two of those have happened while I've been here. The two hottest ones, both 112°. I'm sure there was also a 110 and a 111 during the summer of 2011.

I vaguely remember a month long stretch of scorchio days in my youth that included some 113° days. And that was when we had screen doors instead of A/Cs. (And sometimes those screen doors would darken with vast numbers of mosquitoes.)
I honestly don't think we could survive that now.

I'm sure I couldn't. I don't know how people managed before air conditioning. I know they went out more in the evening, that houses were designed for better airflow and that it was a/c that encouraged so many more to move here, but I have direct and very uncomfortable experience of working with no a/c. It ain't pleasant.
Scorchio number ten, and another one bigger than the forecast. Today is one of those days when the average maximum temperature for the day is a degree higher than it was last year. Last year it went up to 96 tomorrow.
