Blimey, BG. What a day to go back to JSC smiley - yikes I hope the lack of posts since that last one doesn't mean what I hope it doesn't mean. If you see what I mean.

We had a pretty modest storm yesterday around 8.00 or 9.00pm, but San Antonio got hammered. The former Mrs Gosho sent me a picture of a hailstone a friend had picked up which covered almost the entire palm of her hand.

The forecasters have got the high temperature prediction spectacularly wrong these past few days. It was 6° off yesterday, and I think the day before too. Even though we've had temperatures above 90, the daily average has still been below the long term average, though. I like these cooler mornings. It looks like they'll continue throughout the next seven days.

I don't know if you've noticed - we've already had at least three 100° temperatures in the bottom section from 2011 already. Boy, did that summer begin early smiley - headhurts

Yesterday 85/64 (20% chance of rain) (actual: 91/62, 0.63" rain)

One other thing. I believe the hurricane season begins on June 1st? Which is next Monday. And we've already had two named storms.

I stayed a bit late at work yesterday, then donned the foul weather gear, hopped on the bike and the rain cleared. smiley - ok
I did have to ride through about 5 inches of standing water in a construction zone that's obviously buggered the drains (on an evacuation route no less).

I figure they should just do away with the concept of a season for hurricanes ever since 2005, the year that the weather service had to resort to using Greek letters as the season went past Z names and into the following year (31 named storms).

Too early to say, but possibly heading in the direction of Louisiana/Alabama/Florida panhandle.

Looking back at last year, we had to wait until July 14th for our first 100° day, which seemed like a blessing, but between then and the last 100° day on September 25th there were only 17 days of double digits, and most of those were mid to upper 90s. The heat index would have been above 100 probably every day, and a few more either side of that.

2 June, 2020 and we're already up to our third named storm, this one in the Gulf.

At 4PM CDT, Tropical Storm Cristobal was located at 19.1 N 92.9 W or 740 miles SSE of JSC, moving S at 3 MPH. Maximum sustained winds were 40 MPH.

TS Cristobal is forecast to make loop around slowly in the far southern Bay of Campeche tonight and tomorrow possibly moving inland over the Yucatan. Should Cristobal survive, steering currents are forecast such that a northerly turn would occur late Thursday night or early Friday morning. The latest NHC forecast track would then take Cristobal northward at a slowly increasing speed with slowly intensifying winds. JSC is currently barely outside the western edge of the 5 day error cone. The most likely time of arrival for tropical storm force winds at JSC would be Sunday morning and likely no earlier than Saturday evening, if at all. There is a larger than normal uncertainty in the forecast location and strength this weekend.

Yup. Here's the latest as of Wednesday afternoon, a few minutes ago.
"The latest on Tropical Storm Cristobal: It is currently located over Mexico but is expected to emerge over the Gulf this weekend and move northward. At this time, impacts should remain to our east, however this solution would lead to potential record-setting heat early next week."

And look at the temperatures for next Monday and Tuesday smiley - headhurts

By the way, this was what I wrote exactly a year ago:
"Three days into hurricane season and we already have tropical weather in the forecast. Wednesday's 70% chance is due to a disturbance in the Bay of Campeche that has a 60% chance of becoming a tropical cyclone".

Plus ça change.

If the temperature reaches the predicted 100° today it'll be one month and two days earlier than the average first 100° temperature in Austin (July 10th). I don't hold it as any kind of portent on this occasion because it's the tropical storm that's causing it, although I still haven't worked out how.

We fell short of it by one degree yesterday. I think we'll make it today. There was a heat index reading of 108 at Camp Mabry, and 106 at the airport.
