This is turning out to be an interesting summer so far. It seemed to take us a long time to get out of winter, then summer arrived as if it went from 0-60 almost instantly. We've had several weeks of moisture-laden south winds giving us Houston-like humidity, interspersed with a handful of days like yesterday where a cold front and associated rain kept the temperature well below average (and very welcome, I might add). There's more of that likely over the next two or three days.

That all means June was a relatively comfortable, and wet, month. There were 16 days where the temperature was at or below the average temperature for the day, based on the daily minimum and maximum, and we totalled 4.45" of rain, which is about half an inch below the amount we're ahead for the year so far.

As far as those odd rain reports are concerned, once again the numbers on both pages add up to the same amount - 0.89". Yet I'm still flummoxed as to how we got the amount the rolling month page states on the 29th.

Yesterday 90/70 (30% chance of rain) (actual: 86/68, 0.47" rain)
Today 90/70 (40% chance of rain)
Tuesday 91/73 (30% chance of rain)
Wednesday 89/72 (50% chance of rain)
Thursday 93/75 (20% chance of rain)
Friday 95/76 (10% chance of rain)
Saturday 95/76 (20% chance of rain)
Sunday 95/76 (20% chance of rain)

Average max/min for this time of the year: 94/74
Record high temperature for today: 104 (2018)
Record low temperature for today: 65 (1923)

When I say "a relatively comfortable month" I mean, of course, besides all those high heat index numbers, some of which were above 110°F.

smiley - laugh There is, within my living memory because I saw it on the TV, record of snow falling during a cricket match in either June or July. It didn't actually stop the game because it was nothing more than a brief flurry, but I remember the commentary.

I heard this on KUT earlier today http://www.kut.org/post/how-wet-spring-means-cooler-summer-austin

I knew most of that having learned some basic meteorology and climatology in O and A level geography at school. It can keep on doing that for the rest of the summer as far as I'm concerned. I think it's somewhat misleading, though, to quote the average number of 100° days for last century and this without adding the caveat that 2011 was off the scale and extraordinary. And, of course, that there have only been 19 full summers to average out so far this century, and unless we get a fierce hot spell in July and August, this 20th summer will fall well below that quoted number of 38.
