That was the last 100°+ reading. It was 97 at 21.53, which was just about the time I was going to bed. And at 5am here, when I got up, it was 84, so the a/c had to go on straight away. At least we didn't make the forecast 100, although I think we might today. Camp Mabry hasn't fallen below 80 overnight.

Yesterday 100/76 (10% chance of rain) (actual: 97/78, no rain)
Today 100/77 (10% chance of rain)
Friday 96/77 (10% chance of rain)
Saturday 93/78 (20% chance of rain)
Sunday 92/77 (30% chance of rain)
Monday 91/72 (30% chance of rain)
Tuesday 91/74 (20% chance of rain)
Wednesday 93/75 (10% chance of rain)

Average max/min for this time of the year: 93/73
Record high temperature for today: 106 (1925)
Record low temperature for today: 56 (1912)

~~~~~~~~~~~
The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory beginning at 9AM lasting until 7PM this evening that includes JSC.
At 8:10 AM this morning JSC Bldg 30 was 83 degrees with a heat index of 94. This temperature was 2 degrees warmer than yesterday and humidity is slightly higher than yesterday at that time. The forecast high at JSC Bldg 30 today is 93 which is only 1 degree below the JSC record for today. The combination of near record heat and humidity will send the heat index above 100 shortly before noon and above 103 by 1 PM. NASA Ellington Field, Sonny Carter Training Facility and portions of JSC further away from Clear Lake will likely see slightly higher temperatures and heat index readings.
~~~~~~~~~~~

N.B. Downtown Houston will be much hotter as it's further away from the coast and JSC is right on Clear Lake. 90% humidity sucks. I went for a walk at 7:30 and was dripping sweat at 8:00am. smiley - wah

We still haven't had our 'official' first 100° day but we might as well have. There was a heat index reading yesterday at the airport of 114 at 4.53pm (96° with 58% humidity), and standing besides the pasteuriser at work where the air temperature was 99°, the heat index was well above 120.

I'm getting rather tired of these persistent southerly winds bringing Gulf moisture and humidity with them. Another uncomfortable one at work yesterday with a 106F heat index at the airport. I felt a few spots of rain as I went outside for something in the afternoon, but it barely even made the ground wet.

It looks as if our first actual 100° day won't arrive until before July comes in.

Wait, is southerly a wind coming from or to the south? I think it might be the latter, now I recall the words of that song by Kathleen Ferrier, in which case, I'm tired of these northerly winds.

Yeah, that's a thing I struggled with for awhile. But, as I understand it, wind direction is always described by where it's coming from. So both a "South wind" and a "Southerly wind" are the same. I think of a wind vane's arrow. It points toward the wind. This all sunk in during the years my father owned small sailboats.

You're probably right, so perhaps the people who wrote the song weren't meteorologically knowledgeable (and why should they be): "Blow the wind southerly, southerly, southerly. Blow the wind south..." has always sounded to me, ever since I used to hear the song on the radio when I was a kid, like the singer wants the boat in question to come from the north.

Any road up. We had a prediction of storms overnight but they fizzled out just as they got to Austin, from what I can gather, but the cold front associated with them didn't. Looking at the hourly temperature readings from Camp Mabry, it was 81° at 04.51, then 68° an hour later smiley - biggrin Which means we only missed equalling the record low temperature by a single degree smiley - bigeyes

This morning, as I headed into the shower, the report on the radio mentioned that the line of showers was just crossing I-10 North of Downtown Houston. As I stepped out of the shower I could hear the wind picking up. By the time I got dressed and ready to head out the door with the dog, it was pouring outside.

The line of storms was moving at around 30 mph. That jibes with my estimates from that report.

We actually did equal the record for the daily minimum temperature yesterday. The first five hours of the day were all above 80°, then the reading at 05.51 was 69. After that it never got warmer than 76, so the figures below are a little misleading. It was a beautifully cool day, and although it was heavily overcast most of the morning and afternoon, the sun came out around 4pm and it was a gorgeous midsummer evening on a par with anything I remember from back home smiley - brave

The rain total is misleading too. The airport recorded 0.55", but there were 2" totals in plenty of places around Austin.

And it's only 77° in here this morning instead of the 83/84 it's been for the past week or more. No need for air conditioning. Yet.

Apparently we're under a dense fog advisory. It looks clear out there now, not even misty, but the fog often seems to affect only the eastern side of I35 smiley - huh

There was no fog, and it was hardly even misty on the eastern side of I35. There was, however, an almighty downpour about half an hour before I left work, and some steady rain as I was on my way to the bus stop. The airport (which is only a mile or so from my workplace) got far more rain than Camp Mabry. 1.27", of which 1.21" fell in about half an hour. And no, of course I didn't take my umbrella to work yesterday.

There's another sub-90 temperature in the forecast. We'll see how long it takes for that to go back to 90+.

If I take it I probably won't need, but I will pick up my umbrella on the way out of the door this morning, partly because of this http://twitter.com/NWSSanAntonio/status/1144913348519243776

But also because I've just had a look at the satellite loop and noticed some storms developing in far north east Texas, exactly where those predictions say it's coming from http://www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov/GOES/sector_band.php?sat=G16&sector=sp&band=GEOCOLOR&length=24

I didn't need it, of course. Oh, the rain arrived alright. In the early hours of today. And once again I am confused, because the NWS rolling month page for Camp Mabry http://forecast.weather.gov/product.php?site=NWS&product=CF6&issuedby=ATT states that we had 0.42" of rain yesterday, but the hourly observation page for the last three days http://w1.weather.gov/data/obhistory/KATT.html records no rain until after midnight, which means that 0.42" can only have fallen between 11.51pm and 12.00am, which I doubt very much.

And still no sign of 100°, leastways, not the air temperature. We've had quite enough heat index readings above 100 thank you. 104 yesterday at the airport.
