Titania (gone for lunch)

Much too late and much too bad a cold to bother with any RL details, so here goes...

Omens of Oblivion: The Great Escape

While carefully pulling back, Freya pondered the captain's words. Somehow she got the impression that this was not the execution patrol she had been led to expect. Not until she had backed as far away from the door as possible, with her back against the wall, did one of the guards unlock it, and they all traipsed into her cell. The captain pushed in one of the stones in the wall and, to Freya's astonishment, a part of the wall slid aside to reveal a tunnel with a set of stonesteps leading down it. Had she but known! As the elderly man in the ermine trimmed mantle prepared to descend, he cast a look at Freya, then stopped abruptly, staring at her face as if he had seen a ghost.

'You are the one from my dreams!'

Freya's eyes darted to the left, then to the rigt, but it seemed there was no doubt that he was addressing anyone else but her. And yet, despite her memory loss, Freya was pretty sure she had never seen this man before - so how could he possibly have dreamt of her? And not very pleasant dreams at that, judging from the haunted look in his eyes.

It turned out it was the Emperor Uriel Septim himself that was standing before her. Freya did not quite grasp what he was talking about (the ever present headache didn't help) but it seemed there was some kind of danger looming, and the guards were escorting the Emperor out of the city through a secret escape route, that much she did grasp.

'As for what you have done, it does not matter. That is not what you will be remembered for. Take care - there will be blood and death before the end.'

With these mystifying words, the Emperor turned around and followed the captain down the stairs, closely followed by the two body guards. When Freya made as if to follow them, she was merely told to stay out of their way, so she decided to tag along discreetly, keeping a slight distance, just in case.

They had not gotten very far when assassins launched an attack, obviously having been waiting for them. The Emperor pulled back, motioning to Freya to pull back as well while the guards faught the attackers. It was a dreadful attack, in which the guard captain was viciously slain, much to the Emperor's concern. Three assassins lay dead on the floor, their armour vanished, only wearing dark red robes and hoods.

Cautiously, they all proceeded, the two remaining guards protecting the Emperor fore and aft, with Freya tagging along close behind, dreading another attack. Once they arrived at a closed door, a discussion ensued. Finally, one of the guards turned to Freya:

'You stay here, prisoner - don't try to follow us.'

What? They expected her to stay back in this assassin ridden basement? Oh no! Freya darted towards the door they had all vanished through, but too late - as she reached for the handle, she could hear the click of someone locking it from the other side. Cursing under her breath, Freya considered her options. Stay here and try to hide, or go back to her cell? Neither seemed like a good idea - she'd end up dead any which way, from either starvation or execution.

As she turned away from the locked door, Freya heard the sound of claws against stone rapidly approaching. And then they broke through a crumbled wall - two rats, bigger than any rats she had seen before, charging at her. Looking arund, she spotted the dead guard captain's sword and hastily picked it up. Swinging the sword, Freya prepared to defend herself
