I think if the rooster is 1km away, you can pretend like it's katydids. We get to enjoy them from about 10 meters away, in stereo, all night long down here.
Have fun!

I was going out for a swim when I noticed a rather large butterfly and on closer inspection realised it was a Swallowtail. My first ever
Hastily hopping back indoors for my camera, the blessed creature posed on some flowers for me
Then I swum a few lengths of the pool and was witness to 2 huge blue dragonflies having a bit of fun of their own so I averted my eyes so I wouldn't be accused of being a voyeur
Am now off to have my lunch as the sun was baking the top of my head and it was starting to steam (my hair, not my head) and hopefully the others will be back soon although I must say being alone in a Spanish villa with all the available amenities hasn't been much of a hardship
Dunno when I'll get the chance to log in again so *waves*
P.S. There are no mobile phone masts anywhere near in fact I haven't seen anyone else using a mobile, so I won't bother texting again, I tried to send a few but got "Message not sent" and the signal is nil...so

I wouldn't accuse you of doing that GB Shame you were swimming without your camera
Enjoy, it sounds lovely and you deserve this break big time.

Dragonflies only eat mosquitoes...when they are not indulging in other pursuits. Use the mosquito creme now.

I occasionally see the 4 inch green dragonfly out here, but I've seen only one mosquito in the past 20 years.Perhaps the dragonflies are part of the reason why.
Still, it make one wonder what a mesozoic dragonfly with a wingspan of 70 cm might have eaten.

Hiya, yes, I came back yesterday, but only got as far as uploading photos before the great slumber descended on me. I'd have liked today to have been clear-up and write-up day now I'm refreshed but my bungalow is it needs tidying and cleaning; all my plants but 2 are dead because I failed to add "water the plants" to the list of Andrew's jobs-to-do. Andrew did no washing so a pile from the week I was away got done last night, to leave the washer free for my bring-backs from holiday to do today, except I'm going out for lunch as Helen wants to meet Gordon so I'm meeting her from the train and taking her to his, and he's picked up *his* foreign student guest from his foster guardee while we were away so we're having a multicultural Sunday roast lunch
Gordon came back to some bad news, a friend from his choir died on Tuesday we knew he was terminally ill but Gordon only rang him on the Thursday night prior to us leaving for Spain and he seemed more upbeat and hopeful than the previous time they'd talked. So the Sunday lunch might be a bit subdued. I loaded my email account to find a wedding evening invitation (for next Sat night) from one of Helen's closest friends, so that's as I'll know a lot of the people there which will be a pleasant change and I can show Gordon off. You'd think there was a birth due... and yes, all the time we were at the villa, Patsy was expecting a phone call about her niece, who tragically has tried a few times only to have consecutive stillbirths but she's gone to term with this one and everything's fine. Nothing had happened before we left so I am expecting them to email Gordon with any baby news (which will give him a boost from the local tragic news).
As for my holiday, which was there's too much to write up from my notes and I'm thinking of doing it for the Post because I have multiple photos and I couldn't possibly choose. I'm going to upload them to Picasa today although there are none of the hosts due to their instructions and no mention of the villa's name, for obvious reasons. The dragonflies around the pool obviously kept the mozzies away but Patsy had a plug-in which had anti-mozzie stuff in it for each bedroom, and I used an insect repellent which I made up myself, one part Avon's Skin-So-Soft bath oil in a spray bottle topped with water, a tip I learned many moons ago when I was an Avon rep; but had never researched it in the field, it obviously worked for me
KWDave I took the utmost precautions and I never suffered one bite, although I do have sunburned toes and my scalp hairline is beginning to peel where I never went far enough with the suncream. Gordon, however, is covered in bites from his shorts downward to his ankles, and I spent each evening dabbing them with the insect bite cream I brought for me and didn't need.
I'll post this then post the link when the photos are uploaded

This was a truly spectacular, awesome and beautiful place. Some parts were used as shelter by prehistoric man, there are cave drawings (I have a postcard of them , I wish you could see it, it is of 2 ) but I kept it for myself, didn't post it. We couldn't get that far in to see the cave wall etchings, as it was cordoned off for safety reasons.
There's one section which is called the ghostly area (literal translation) due to the spookyness of the formations, I took several shots of what looked like a Crusader on guard.

Great photos GB. Can you scan pictures? Just a thought for the postcard. I wonder how they compare with Australian and African cave drawings?

I don't own a scanner any more
I have done a quick net search and found an image of the fish though, http://www.webmalaga.com/naturaleza/cuevas/nerja/lacueva/pagina6.asp
the webpage is in Spanish.

That's a shame, I find mine very useful. I have a three in one. They seem to have come down considerably in price these days.
I looked at the web page, and the carvings are very similar to those in other parts of the world it seems. Thanks for that.
The caves were stunning, reminded me of my visits to Cheddar and Wookey Hole Happy days!

Sounds like a rather magic holiday. Glad you had fun and got back in one piece (and without any bites, either: I'm amazed).
I'm trying to write up mine now (I spent most of August in the UK), but it's slow going.
TRiG.
