I will NEVER re-install windows again unless I positively HAVE to.
Since I have had this pc, windows has been re-installed both times, yet my GOO has been black since the day I joined h2g2 {May}; there has been one re-instal since then.
I couldn't take the stress.
Is there anywhere I can buy a new monitor? ~Just~ the monitor, I can't run to a new pc...smiley - blue

Hi GB

Just passin thro.

Before you spend any money...
you need to check if it is the monitor at fault.
You said your daughter has the same type of monitor as you.

You try her monitor on your computer and your monitor on hers
or swap it with any other monitor which can run at the same resolution.

If when you swap the monitors over you still get black goo on your machine and blue goo on your daughters then your monitors ok and the fault is in your computer (Graphics card / driver)

If when you switch the monitors your daughters machine displays the black goo then its a monitor problem.

I'm puzzled that you can see the smiley - blue smiley but the dark blue of the goo shows up as black.
I assume you have tried adjusting the colour and contrast controls on your monitor?
If not its a good idea to have a play with those (but note the existing settings first! so you can get back to where you weresmiley - smiley)
Playing with the controls on my monitor can result in the dark blue looking almost black.

If it is a monitor fault it may be cheaper to get it repaired than buy a new one, it depends on how old it is and what the fault is.

Thanks for the input, Bald Bloke.
I would love to swop monitors, as my daughter is not that bothered about h2g2, in fact I think the times she has logged in, it's been in alabaster...smiley - erm
I don't have transport, so that would mean a lot of running around for them, they both work full time...
smiley - sigh
Other than the black GOO, my monitor is fine. I just checked the settings, they're OK.
Believe me, thatsmiley - bluesmiley is a lovely blue. Against a black background!

That is the most puzzleing thing, which is what convinced me it was a browser problem. Her monitor displays blue - both in her browser and on her desktop, which leads me to believe tha the problem is *not* with her monitor / graphics card. Drivers? Could be, but it's most unusual for them to go wrong like this.

Hi Willy and GB

I was asking about the monitor setup because GB can see the blue smiley and the blue on her desktop.

Both of those are lighter than the dark blue of the goo (on my monitor anyway), So I was suspecting it could be the settings of the blue channel of the monitor which were causing the problem. (input signal level too low to turn on the blue gun).

Unfortunatly the only way to check if the problem is with the monitor is to do a swap as I suggested above.

BTW
Willy you need to be careful signing your name , just think what would happen if a joker at the towers created a slightly dodgy smiley?

You cold look a right smiley - tongueout

And NO I'm not going to suggest it to Abi

PS

Happy new year to both of you

Herrrmmmm... Black Goo, eh!??

I always loved Classic Goo, not just because it's Classic, or because it is Fish Friendly, but also because it just so happened to be a BRONCO color... but now, my Denver football team WILL NOT be in the SuperBowl... no chance... darnit!!! smiley - sadface

So I'd like this Black Goo, as I feel a bit like mourning... smiley - sadface

I think it may be the same problem I had with my monitor, GB. My old monitor displayed the Goo background as a very dark blue, but not quite dark enough for me to take it as being black. Now I have a new monitor, and it displays it a much lighter blue - my old monitor had a habit of displaying dark colours darker than they should be. To be honest, I preferred it when it was darker... maybe I should ask the Towers for a dark Goo.

So unfortunately, from here it looks like it's your monitor.
