Well! it had to happen didn't it!.

3 things that went right - service pack 3, net framework 1 and 2, bought driver detective program(that could only load/run with net framework 2, all downloaded and running.

This was too good for the Prof's bad luck fairies brigade, they had to launch a counter attack didn't theysmiley - rofl.

Monday, I bought a £5.99 pc game called jewel quest II(this is very humourous to a few hootoo folksmiley - winkeyebecause of various jibessmiley - laugh)loaded it in and played it, all ok. But saw that a "update manager" icon had appeared below the Microsoft update icon on the list when "start" button is pressed. I left this while Tuesday morning and then thought I'd remove it, as I wasn't bothered about playing jewel quest online against other folk. Ha! removed the icon from there and found another icon in "control panel" but it didn't have a uninstalled section to it ??. So I went into the games folder and found "update" icon and remove it from theresmiley - whistle. Went to my friends for a few hours and came home, turned the pc onblack screen and the words "NTLDR is missing" ziltch and nothing - phone call to a friend andsmiley - sadfacethe update manager of the game possibly and more than likely uses a section of windows in it's operation and has "wiped" the main load/boot up of windowssmiley - wah.

Reinstall XPsmiley - dohhere we go here we go etcsmiley - laughsmiley - laughloads XP and lost everything as per, now the FUN startssmiley - huhmicrosoft updates and wow! SP3 downloads and runs ok after rebooting pc as you have to do. BUT! does ANY other update download ? NO! not even windows media player 11 - nothing - "microsoft can't download this update, your computer is stopping it" aw come on! there's nowt on the bloody computer except windows and my antivirus. Removes antivirus!! "microsoft can't download this update, your computer is stopping it"smiley - laughsmiley - laughit's got to be me, never happened to John Waynesmiley - laughsmiley - laughOUT with the floppy disc - killdisk and WIPE OUT! total hard drive yet again(this is better that any television repeats)reloads XP, everything else updates ok. Now in the progress of putting my programs back on, lost some(and due to memory, I'll probibly not remember whichsmiley - roflaslo emails from friends and official have gone.

all because of jewel quest II, not just ANY of the thousands PC games about, but THAT one - just to keep the humour going

I've left my body to medical science, but IF I was buriedsmiley - winkeyemy tombstone would read "buried yesterday! reinstalled today and again tomorrow and don't count next week out"

umm, you probably didn't need to completely reinstall windows. the XP install disc could probably have repaired it, or failing that third party boot loader/manager software may have been able to fix it.

As I think Pheloxi suggests, did you try System Restore? This can be disappointing but it might have helped.

Sorry you had all that trouble.

NTLDR is missing - that does not allow windows to boot anything up, therefore I could not get in to windows do anything - except reinstall from scratch, I tried repair but that was a dead end,it didn't repairsmiley - sadface

well that's no good, the repair program should have been able to replace the boot loader. I'd suggest making a boot disk, if you can, that way if it happens again you should still be able to boot windows.

Macs are not games deficient. Not for the games Prof plays, that is. Although you do tend to have to pay for them as mac people don't pirate stuff to the extent that PC users do.
