Well enough,shouldn't really complain..

Well! here goes nothing! my windows update nosey thing, is saying err! updates, so goes to windows page and clicks - oh sh! we advise you to download windows service pack 3 etc - download and then come back to see if anymore updates



I'll try againwill it load or will it go round in circles and mean WIPEOUT, only smarties have the answer

part 2 - it didn't workduring later part of installation, it came up with can't read/memory type stuff and after rebooting - took all SP3 stuff off again
now it still shows in task bar as an update, but can't hide it at windows page

Tried to install service pack 3 again and no go, it came up with error code 0X8007F0DA. going in to microsoft's code section etc, it says that to check that "cryptographic services" is set to automatic, it is. It also showed other stuff could be at fault, ie: part of windows corrupted or missing, but when I first installed SP3 and it crashed the pc, I had to reinstall windows as you know, so I don't follow the corrupt part. It's now beyond me on what to do, so sod it and I'll plod on without SP3 lol!

SP3 seems to be solving problems no-one needs to fix. And creating lots of new ones too.

If you can't fix it and don't need it, sod it seems to be the sane reaction.

windows service pack 3 downloaded ok up and running with no problems

in the problem section of my pc advisor magazine, a person was asking for help regarding updates as he kept getting "windows was unable to install the following updates". Something that I have had on occasion and especially with SP3. the returned information was that it is often the fault of a corrupted temporary folder used by windows update and to fix this do the following:

click -start.run & enter "net stop wuauserv" this stops update service.
then!
click -start.run & enter "%windir%" and rename folder "softwaredistribution" to "SDold"
then!
click -start.run & enter "net start wuauserv" to restart the service

So I tried it, the worst that could happen is WIPE OUT! again

from there, I went to windows update and went through the SP3 download set up and Whallah! SP3 is now sorted

PS: I'm not getting over excitedas I will more than likely to be up to my usual tricks/gaffs at anytime in the near future

I am running winxp sp3 though virtualbox, a virtualization software on my mac mini...

it works brilliantly...

mac is not understandable for me, but as long as I do experiment too much it keeps working...

later today I am helping neighbour to reinstall winxp. his pc (from 2000) is not very organised and getting slower and slower so I offered to help to reinstall winxp.

downloaded and installed Net framework 1.1 and 2.0
including 1.1 service pack 1 and security update plus security update for 2.0

but still having problem with a bought program "Driver Detective"(that needed Net version 2.0 to operate and I've just downloaded and it still has problems - so back to the drawing board for that

just rememberedI did have to take my comodo firewall off and turn off my comodo anti virus and just have windows firewall on
