This is the first in a series of projects describing wilderness survival. I will be covering topics such as firestarting, shelter construction, how to procure food and water, and other survival methods in a variety of climates and regions.

"other survival methods in a variety of climates and region"
Given that, and the relatively wide generalizability of the entry, why restrict it in the title to just the Pacific Northwest?

I'm going to tackle wilderness survival one piece at a time, moving from the NW to the SW, mid south, Old South, Mid West, and NE United States. From there, I intend to branch into jungle survival, tropical wetlands, high-humidity desert, low humidity deserts, blizzard survival, arctic survival, and then whatever I've forgotten at that point. Survival methods differ from region to region. What works well in the NW for example can be almost useless in somewhere like Arizona, where heat becomes your biggest enemy.
Thanks for the feedback, though.

If you want this to be about the Northwest specifically, then I really think you need to make a point, throughout the entry, about how things are specific to the Northwest -- this doesn't come through the entry right now at all.

Hi Eric,
This is a fascinating piece of writing. It takes one there, and you feel as though you are there trying to get food and shelter, and fearing the fact that you have no weapons to defend yourself from the wild inhabitants, and the animals! It is objective, informative and beautifully written. In my opinion it should be considered as an Edited Guide article.
The best of luck with your attempts to get it there!
I don't think I shall ever get to go to that neck of the woods at my late age, but one never knows!

There is one tool that I am -never- without, and that's my knife. When I go into the field I carry a standard USAF survival knife. It's strong enough to be a crowbar and tough enough to see some serious abuse. If you have your knife, there is no emergency situation that you can't get out of with some creative thought. The final test for all Survival and Evasion experts is to be dropped in the mountains near Fairchild AFB in Washington State with only a jumpsuit and a knife. They have a radio transmitter that they can use in an emergency but guarantees an automatic fail from SERE instructor school. They have to forage for food and evade capture for a full week. And they do it, too. all you have to do is think positively and creatively, and you can survive almost anything.

I think as this is a fairly huge project a few people have let it slide back through the list a bit. Are you still working on this, Erik, as it's looking very good indeed!

Your Guide Entry has just been picked from Peer Review by one of our Scouts, and is now heading off into the Editorial Process, which ends with publication in the Edited Guide. We've therefore moved this Review Conversation out of Peer Review and to the entry itself.
If you'd like to know what happens now, check out the page on 'What Happens after your Entry has been Recommended?' at EditedGuide-Process. We hope this explains everything.
