You know, maybe you should bring up the photo topic in the announcement thread.

Gnomon - time to move on Posted Feb 5, 2019
Last time I looked there was no official announcement as to where the meet will take place other than that it will bein London. One person said it would probably be in the Shakespeare’s Head but that’s asdefinite as it got.
That was on the official anouncement thread on h2g2. On the official Facebook event, it just said London but showed a map of Manchester. I think they’ve fixed that now.

Gnomon, thank you, that's how it should be, respectful.
Tavaron, I think I've been raising the "photo issue" in meet threads for about 10 years, and been told it's not possible. Once I was told anyone at a meet is "fair game" and can't object. But the law has changed and social attitudes towards privacy too. It's worth discussing again.
Educational institutions have a published policy, updated since GDPR. For example, this seems a very sensible and clear summary and set of guidelines for an institution, which perhaps h2g2 could use as a model. I appreciate that individual photographers might need slightly different guidelines, but it's all just about respect for each other isn't it?

And finally, although some parts of the Ts and Cs were updated in May 2018, including the NPL Privacy Policy, the actual House Rules for User Generated Content appear to remain as they were in 2011.

It would be quite easy to add an extra bullet point to either "Remember your Manners" or "Protect your privacy and respect the privacy of others".

Gnomon: this is the announcement thread where everything is discussed: https://h2g2.com/entry/A85834173/conversation/view/F21546918/T8319937/page/last/#P0 Basically the House Rules only apply to everything happening ON SITE as far as I am aware. They have no influence on meets or one Researcher having a phonecall with another. We do have a policy about posting only pictures of people with their consent ON SITE. We basically cannot influence what people post elsewhere. What I suggest is making everyone who attends the meet aware BEFORE the meet that not everyone is ok with pictures. I do think that most people will then act accordingly.

Here's a suggestion
Anyone who doesn't want to be identifiable in photos could wear retroreflective hats (with "NO PHOTOS" in dark lettering). If someone ignores the warning on the hat, the retroreflective material will reflect flashes causing the images to be significantly underexposed obscuring the wearers faces.
A line of clothing was recently marketed to celebs as anti-paparazzi wear.

Pierre de la Mer ~ sometimes slightly worried but never panicking ~ Posted Feb 5, 2019
I still believe a few minutes of photographing and subsequent total ban on photographing is the best way. And easiest. Feasible. Leave the party for a few minutes if you don't want to be photographed. We'll call you back when we're done - and then we'll all turn off our phones (unless we are heart surgeons and/or firefighters on call).
Who can remember who gave consent and who did not?
Besides: Are we coming together to enjoy good company or do we absolutely need to photograph, text, check Facebook and watch youtube?

I think some will be on the phone texting to others who are unable to attend the meet. At least I had the impression this happened in the past.

Thanks for the link to the announcement thread Tav. I've been watching that thread since last June for any official details. My confusion was that I didn't know that Superfrenchie is an official.
