Deflation can be just as damaging as inflation to the economy.
And yes, cutting taxes for the rich can help stimulate the economy. The rich do not hide any additional money they have in mattresses, they invest it. That becomes money that people borrow to start businesses, buy homes, cars, finance college educations, etc. That said, I don't think we really know whether it is more effective to cut taxes on the rich, or on the middle class. But tax cuts do work to create economic growth, though they are certainly not a cure-all.

Well I've solved the mystery of where Dubya inherited his grasp of reality from. His mother.
A couple of comments from Barbara Bush on a recent Larry King Live:
http://www.cnn.tv/TRANSCRIPTS/0310/22/lkl.00.html
"Well, you know, mothers are allowed to be proud of their sons. And it gets a little old when 10 grown men run around the country not talking about what they're going to do, but knocking my precious, courageous, brilliant son.
But the same would be true if something happened that was difficult for Jeb or for Doro or Neil or Marvin. And you can criticize me, but don't criticize my children and don't criticize my daughters-in-law and don't criticize my husband, or you're dead."

Thanks for the quote, Dave. (I can't follow the link here, but I will later...)
Dick Cheney's callousness is astounding. No war on American soil. no, but as nobody gives a dam about Iraqis, let's fight terror on their soil, destroy their infrastructure. Nice one, Dick!

Empty Sky, I saw a review in the Herald, of a book called 'Fat Land: How Americans Became the Fattest People in the World', by Greg Critser, Penguin, presumably 2003. It is accompanied (the review) by the most disturbing picture of a Bubba feeding his face with a cream
