Well, perhaps sanity isn't everything.....

pah... sanity... what's sanity ever done for me? nothing... that's waht...... damn sanity... over ratted in my box... or book... going back to drones... will the inevitable piza-delivery drones be able to deliver pizza directly onto my balcony? that would be so cool

It would be better for us pizza-lovers if thy restricted themselves to delivering pizzas. Don't want anything to get mixed up.

"Wouldn't it be simpler to trade your dog in for a lower-maintenance pet like a cat?"
Paulh, this would make life simpler for me, but not for the unsuspecting owner of the garden the cat chose to go in. I know this to be fact, having unsuspectingly uncovered cat poo in my own garden .
Apart from walking them (which is one of the enjoyable things about dog ownership) the only real difference I can see between having a cat and a dog is that I have legal responsibility for the dog.
Well, that and you don't technically own a cat, you serve it

Sorry, I can't think of a better place for poo than a garden. Throwing your animal's feces in the rubbish and then buying fertilizer for your plants seems disjointed to me. The rabbits leave their poo in my flower garden, and I consider it a gift.
But then, I'm a tree-hugger and a deliberate feeder of pollinators with my plant choices. Whether the Garden of Eden was real or not, I do't see a down side to recreating it as much as possible. There are people who specialize in adding the right ingredients to any type of rotting material to speed up the process of turning it into usable soil.
Peace

I absolutely agree, paulh - but when you're planting and find yourself with cat poo in your hand, that's pretty unpleasant. Especially when you don't have a cat
I read something in the last week or so about a countryside organisation trying to encourage people to flick poo with a stick into the undergrowth where it can biodegrade naturally*. I think that was to counteract that horrible habit some people have of bagging it then leaving it hanging on trees and bushes . That also gives us responsible dog owners a bad name.

You should add a few rubber bands to your pets' feed. This makes it easier to pick up the poos with a pencil and fling them into the neighbor's garden.

It's easier to deal with if you have a composting mechanism. Last thing you want is a dump full of little plastic bags of poop.

For some reason, that makes me think of a scene from "Borat"

I think a full of little plastic bags of poop would be even worse. Are we redesigning the main hall of Hell for a party?
