"Corn is from the New World. It wasn't known to Europeans till they went to the Americas" [reverendzack]
The word "corn" preexisted the introduction of New World corn into the Old World. It was a term for grain.

Reverendzack, corn was well known in the old world before the discovery of the Americas, being a generic word for wheat, barley, oats and rye. When maize was discovered it was called Indian corn and later sweet corn to distinguish it from the other types.

California, USA--a bit farther north than ITI, and likely more so than Mr X, as well--Oregon's only 19 miles away and the ocean's less than a mile away, even if you follow the roads. Less than a quarter mile, as the gull flies.
