Why do we keep getting the same stories over and over on TV dramas

One problem with war adaptations is the budget. 'Sharpe' was very good, but when the books involve vast battles in which an army of tens of thousands meets another army of tens of thousands, and the television show makes it look like a 5-a-side match with a smoke machine, it isn't quite in the same league. But of course drama should triumph over budget and effects, which with Sharpe it was.
