I haven't seen the polls for the swing states - I am not sure the "national" vote tells us much. Some states will vote Republican no matter what.

Look, it's very much an aside to the main thrust of this conversation but Clinton *was* impeached, for perjury. French politicians may well shag a hole in the barber shop floor but the crucial thing is they don't lie about it. Clinton lied. As did Mrs Clinton when she fantasised about running off planes under fire from snipers. So the Clintons are proven liars.
Clinton was re-elected for the same reasons Obama will be re-elected: he was the incumbent and people generally liked him as a person.

As much as you would maybe like to believe that the presidential election is a popularity contest, it is not. Whenever it has appeared so it has been because someone wanted it to look that way. Our election process has been compromised for many years now and most of us are only just beginning to realise this.
Most of what we witness during an election is what they want us to witness, what they want us to think happened.
However, there are good guys still around and i believe they have made a difference.
Clinton, Hillary, Gore and the rest of that team are amazing and did so much for America it is almost impossible to report accurately.
Obama and his team are doing likewise. Bush and his team almost destroyed us and messed up the rest of the world to boot.
I still don't get what anyone is going to get out of Bush's type of government coming back into ascendancy. Oh sure, I know what the Big Guys will get out of it, but little folks like us, swl? What could possibly be in it for you other than losing any job or home security?
Take courage, stop believing them that all is fearful and doomsday; you can think for yourself, research what is really going on, choose who is telling the truth and who is not... but you have to first look at all the stuff out there, not just stuff in your favorite comfortable news outlets. Some of them, I know this is shocking but it is true, some of them are not trustworthy.
K, sorry, bit of a rant there but this is so important.

The issue is that nowadays the opposition and opposition media are prepared to discuss the Presidents cock in public.

My message was addressed towards swl comment: If you want christian fundamentalists being elected then that would be a new tact on your part. Why would an avowed atheist support such a witch hunt on Bill's sexual activities.

And here I thought we were broaching a new scandal involving presidents involved in cock fights. They are illegal but still go on.

I think the Bush/Dukakis election was quite famous for media ads appearing to influencing the election (playing the race card).

Yeah. Can you refresh my memory? How did that exactly go? The race card and Dukakis... I thought they were mainly saying he was a lump, a stone, dull and boring.

"Women particularly were affected by the ad. Said Dukakis campaign manager Susan Estrich, "The symbolism was very powerful...you can't find a stronger metaphor, intended or not, for racial hatred in this country than a black man raping a white woman....I talked to people afterward....Women said they couldn't help it, but it scared the living daylights out of them."

Clearly the lesson for all political parties in the US is to only select white, Christian males as candidates.

Reading more about the Bush - Dukakis campaign ... I'll stop using the epithet "the race card". Even though it can be argued that a race card was played - from what I had previously heard from the UK, Dukakis did seem to be responsible for extending the Furlough Programme beyond it's original remit. There was a clear case to answer and the Republican's were very effective in raising the issue.

I was commenting on the fundamentalist christian concept of sexual conduct.

A man that can lie to his wife can lie to anyone - colleagues, friends, strangers, voters. A man that can carry on an affair lies to his wife multiple times every single day and becomes a practiced and accomplished liar.
Would you trust a practiced and accomplished liar with your future, your friend's future, your children's future?

You raise a fair and valid point there. I think I'll stop now as I think I have taken this thread off-topic by going on about christian sex ethics and race.
Romney is electable (he seems to have done a good job in Massachusetts), and it's up to the US Americans to decide in a few days time who they want.

In a recent report at William and Mary
http://www.wm.edu/as/publicpolicy/documents/st_leg_comp_2012_final.pdf
40% of all state legislative seats in the 2012 election are uncontested. The report states a possible reason for this is recent redistricting. Google gerrymandering.
