Nah, you've got that wrong Geggs. It's a that point that your victory becomes assured.
If, on the other hand, you've got your enemy entirely in your power, strapped to a chair, and all you need to do is put a gun to their head and pull the trigger, but instead you strap them into an improbably complex trap that will kill them slowly and painfully after you've left, assuming they don't first escape from it with a single bound - THEN you know, beyond any shadow of a doubt, that you're doomed.

You're probably right. Still, being in thrall does things to your brain so that you remain clueless until the last possible moment.
