The nearest to me does a 'saver day' thing on Tuesdays - £3 a ticket. Not quite as good a deal as the Orange thing, but not far off.

I win! I pay 10 pounds for evenings in our local cinema. I think it's possible to get in for 9.50 somewhere in the area at the same time but that's about as cheap as it gets in my bit of London. Before 5pm Mon to Thurs you can get in for about 7. Woohoo!

The pricing of food thing: When you're determining a price to charge for anything, there's always a trade-off involved. You can set the price very high and not sell so much, or you can set the price low, and less more at lower profit per item.
So, to be honest, if people bring their own food or drink in with them it's probably a flaw in the cinema business model. Lower the price and you'll see the sales rocket.

I'll try that again:
"You can set the price very high and not sell so much, or you can set the price low, and **sell** more at lower profit per item."

I was at the Vue in Ocean Terminal, Edinburgh last night. My ticket was £9 something and I opted for a kiddie snack box for £3.50. I upgraded the drink from a Fruit Shoot to a normal Coke for an extra 50p and got a Twirl and a generous amount of popcorn, which I thought was an okay deal. My friend and I did consider one of the sharing combos, but had kittens when we saw they wanted £10 for two bottles of water - yes, water! - and a large popcorn

Maybe at first glance, swl. But the difference is that The Odeon don't have their own police force, prison system and judiciary to ensure that I buy their overpriced popcorn. That's enough to make any comparison with taxation useless.

I've paid £7.50 for a ticket to Cornerhouse this Wednesday, but I expect to pay a bit more there, as it's an independent art-house cinema.
