To me, these days, SS means 'solid state', or sometimes 'single/single' (referring to guitar pickup configuration).
Sussuruss.

SSRIs
Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors. ie boosting the old Serotonin levels in the brain.
(Very effective anti-depressants for me...unfortunately the mess up libido for a lot of people..including me..so they are a no show now.)

By coincidence, divine intervention, serendipity or
my own 'strange' affinity for connecting the dots
and dashes of realities, I came upon an Isaac Asimov
story yesterday called "Spell My Name With An S"
Written in 1958 it tells the story of an obscure
American nuclear physicist (third generation of
Polish extraction) who is tired of being part of
a large team of government researchers and
wants recognition and independence.
On the advice of a 'numerologist' he legally changes
his name to be spelled with a S instead of a Z.
This causes US intelligence services to investigate
his motives and search his ancestry for others of
the same original Polish name and they discover one
working for the Russians in the same field of nuclear
research who has gone deep undercover and causes
them to suspect a potential spying association.
They take him out of the team environment and have him
hired as Associate Professor of Physics at Princeton not
realising they have fulfilled his dreams. They also discover
his Russian namesake is working on a uniquely in-genius
radiation shelter that could dramatically shift the balance
of power by giving the USSR a survivability quotient that
could make a first strike scenario viable.
As a result they begin similar research and make it known
they have developed a working radiation shelter that takes
away the Russian advantage and averts a Third Whirled War.
At the end it is revealed that the numerologist is an alien
life-form who, on a bet with another alien, had produced the
first Class A Event Change with a Class F Cause Change. He
changed the course of human history by preventing WW3 and he
did it by having one man change one letter in his name.
Interesting cause and effect story!
All based on the letter S.

My thanks too, Asimov synopsis, the brilliance without having to actually read the bugger again (I keep wanting to reread but know I will be disappointed).
