What no-one seems to realise is that, holding beach volley ball here in England would guarantee a UK Gold medal - what other country could possibly play in the thick mud in pissing rain? We'd probably be the only team to enter under the circumstance and would win by default!! (It couldn't possibly be held in Brittany - the French would blockade the beaches until we all gave in and let them win)- no change there then....

How come SIDNEY ZOOO gets so much advertising. Do animal sanctuaries usually sponsor sport?

Referring back to an earlier question.
New Zealand held back one of their horse from the vets inspectin before day three, and one of the remaining three was not deemed fit and as the score is only on the top three horses they no longer had a team, for the team event.

Gooday everyone,
Slug, and you gave me a smack for being politically incorrect!!
Great day yesterday. Madame Butterfly cruises to gold, but tonight is her defining moment, the 200 Butterfly. And what about the men's 4x200 relay? What a win, and sits nicely alongside the 4x100 gold. In Atlanta, the US won every relay, mens and womens. And then the equestrian; did any of you catch the Oz team doing their laps of honour? Absolute magic. That was Hoy's third consecutive gold medal in the three day event, only the second Aussie to win gold in the same event in three consecutive Olympics - the first was the matchless Dawn Fraser with three 100 freestyles. And speaking of swimming, the flying Dutchman sets another world record, this time for the 100 free; the final, which was supposed to be a match race between Klim and Popov has taken on a completely different character.
Someone else sent home for drug taking this morning - not sure, but may have been a Kenyan relay athlete.
Walter.

3 years in a row. Reminder that Steve Redgrave is going for 5 in a row. 1984-2000 that will be some feat and that coxless four looked good inthe first round.

Gooday Demon Drawer,
Fingers crossed for Redgrave. I don't think anyone could begrudge him a fifth gold, but what a fantastic achievement to have accumulated golds at four Olympics - he has well and truly cemented his place in Olympic legend already.

What about Eric, all on his own, in the 100 Free? Fantastic! He got cheered as much as Ian Thorpe.
A swimmer in the excellent tradition of Eddie the Eagle.

Australia has won Gold in Equestrian (team 3 day), shooting (trap) & archery - beating Americans in each.
I would have thought the Yanks would be better at the cowboy & indian stuff

Abi Posted Sep 20, 2000
Yeah but the equestrain one is a little hollow Bruce as most of your team live and compete over here

Demon Drawer Posted Sep 20, 2000
Well they are only 3 golds behing the Americans in the medal table I hope they catch up. Be a little bit of history.

I'm back, having actually done a day's work today.... Sorry, about the non PC remarks about the (probably very charming) Bavarian women, but despite criticism I noticed no-one actually disagreed with me.
I loved watching Eric the sea slug swimming his way to victory, it was one of the true moments of Olympic history and although we were all amused by his efforts, I would be the first to admit that he did far better than I would have done!!

Yeah, but now all the Indians are dealing blackjack, and the cowboys are no longer riding the range... they bale hay and ride pissed-off animals for fun. And the equestrian event really doesn't apply... not too many gates and pools on the wild frontier.
Why doesn't Britain host the summer Olympics? No summer.

Shouldn't think there would be much call for dressage on the range either.
Just confuse my pesky enemies by making my horse perform some complicated but kinda nifty looking counter-canter and half passes.

Gooday each,
Well, the golds keep on coming, the latest in cycling. Swimming, shooting, archery, cycling, equestrian, athletics, rowing, tennis hockey - what a talented bunch of gold medal gatherers. And we are world cricket and Rugby champs, netball champs etc etc etc. All this from a country of a little less than twenty million people. No wonder we go around busting with pride.
Perec loses it upstairs. A shame that such a grand athlete bows out that way. And a silver medal winning weightlifter disqualified for drug offences. Did anyone catch up with the Russian gymnasts yesterday: talk about stunningly good.
Walter.

I remember Clive James writing, with regard to the '72 Olympics, that we (the British) should be worried if we were further up the medal table (I think we got 2 golds that time), as this would mean that we were paying far too much heed to sporting achievement to the detriment of things that really matter.
I'd love to hear his opinion on Oz's showing this time round.
Key: Complain about this post
