What are the most famous photos?
Orcus Posted Jun 1, 2009
Sorry if I got a bit overly arsy.
I have a lot of work to do in my life and job and reading books on a subject I've no great flair for or major interest in isn't likely to happen at the moment sadly. Much as I would like to. Also I didn't particularly fancy getting into a great debate about things for much the same reason.
One thing I perhaps never got across there was that the exhibits in Tate Modern (in general, some *were* very good*) weren't to my tastes but I have been to other modern art galleries and been blown away. The museum of modern art in Glasgow springs immediately to mind.
Anway lets get back on topic.

Christopher and I visited CCoMA recently. I have to say...it wasn't at its best. They've rotated out a lot of my favourite pieces.

Still, it did exercise the little grey cells

Don't know if anyone mentioned this one, but it's definitely is up there at the top of the list for me...

I find it quite sad that people spent so long fighting over the scraps of Marilyn Monroe's profitability when she seems to have had such an unhappy life.
On a lighter note, I found this little bit of ridiculousness on Wikipedia: "Some Like It Hot received a "C" (Condemned) rating from the Catholic Legion of Decency".

This page contains some photos about the Spanish Civil War, some of the Internatial Brigadists. Scroll down to see one which is also iconic: No pasarán, They will not pass!
Don´t miss the "barricade" of the first photo:

It's hard to say what makes a photo memorable and thus famous. For me, the first one with the horses is more memorable than the more famous one of the guy being shot.

I think perhaps video, in TV news and on the U-toobs, has rendered the uniqueness and surprise of the still-photo's single captured moment a rare and endangered species. We are simply overloaded with images these days, especially moving images.
That is not to say that great photographers cannot still compose a single powerful image, just that those famous random and candid moments of the past which this thread celebrates are now more likely to be 'caught on tape'.
I for one am always interested in looking at new pics!
There's one or two in today's BBC News 'Day in Pictures'.

And an iconic images of the inventor of the Frisbee.
And his toys.

THanks!! those pictures are great. A beautiful collection. A painter or anyone amateur to painting or drawing can have with them an excellent resource.
They are inspiring in many senses.
Merci beaucoup!

It seems to me every time some photo gets voted Press Photo of the Year, it will be shown to have been faked shortly after.

Some of those world press photos are impressive, but that website is pants.
And what's up with the watermarks?
What are the most famous photos?
taliesin Posted Feb 13, 2010
Oh, I know _why_ they watermark, it's just that they watermark the so-called enlarged versions of the images, which aren't very much larger than the ones you see initially, which are not.
It's silly.
