A Live8 update.
There are now 9 live8 concerts happening.
On July 2: The orignal line-up of London, Paris, Berlin, Rome, and Philadelphia. New concerts to-be announced tomorrow are Tokyo, Torronto, and Johannesburg. This now means that the continent Live8 are trying to help, will get a show. That is the 7 richest countries in the world, and the poorest continent.
On July 6: Edinburgh. This will co-incide with the G8 meeting, and will be a "peaceful" family event.
DV.
PS- Any comments on the G8 and Make Poverty History still very much welcome...

The following is from a GCAP e-mail newsletter. I thought it might be of interest to anybody who has doubt about the trustworthiness of the governments. To subscribe to the messages, go to http://www.whiteband.org .
Increased Aid
There has been much argument, even by supporters of GCAP, against increase in aid to poor countries, the argument in use being that the funds will be mishandled by corrupt governments. While it cannot be ignored that poor governance has hindered development from Myanmar to Swaziland, this is not a strong enough argument against increase in aid as most nations have non-governmental, non-profit making organizations that can be trusted to disburse of aid in the event that the giving nation has little faith in the government of the recipient nation. That, at a time when developed nations are using astronomical amounts of money to explore the possibility of life form on other planets, there are over one billion people on this planet who are living on less than a dollar a day is a catastrophe. It is very much realism that no matter how lacking in democracy the policies of a developing nation's government are, it is always the citizens who suffer from sanctions and reduction in aid rather than the leadership. There should therefore be some solution to waylay bad leadership and still assist the poor persons to better themselves. If however the leaders that will be assembled in Scotland fails to redress the situation of developing nations through increase in aid, there can be no doubt that 11 million children as noted by UNICEF, or may be even more, will continue to die annually before their fifth birthday.

Don't be donwhearted by the people who say that protesting won't make a difference, it can (Poll Tax anyone?)
But even if it didn't have an immediate effect, if I didn't do anything, how could I explain to my grandchildren that I could have done something to stop this and yet I did nothing? - hence my participation in protests from youth membership of CND, not paying my Poll Tax, sending letters re some political prisoners, anti-war demos, boycotting Nestle products, Murdoch ones, until this year..
I doubt that much of this made any diffeerence, but you should still have a go!!
By the way, did anyone catch that terrifying statistic about AIDS in Africa? I'm sure it was 6000 deaths a month, and in the footage a young African health visitor describes this as "Two World Trade Centres" Breathtaking (Hope I got the stats right)

White bands are now available in Australia!
The Aussie Make Poverty History campaign has been revamped see the website previously mentioned, and you can buy the bands, though they are hard to get.
Run out of time to order online, only 4 working days till July 1, and in the shops they are hard to get, but will try to somehow get my hands one one!

Here's a run down on what I did today for white band day:
Well, yesterday I went to the school principal, to see if we were allowed to wear them at school tomorrow (very strict uniform policy). He agreed, sent an e-mail out to the teachers supporting the cause, and said that next time (September 10th) it could be a whole school event.
And so today, myself and a large number of other people wore our white bands, and I told anybody who would listen what we were for. Many were concerned, although some were so whatish.
So that about sums me up, but anyone else ant to comment on their white band day?
Remember, don't stop wearing it now, it's white band week, and there is stacks going on!
