Israeli/Palestinian conflict: where does the balance lie?
warner - a new era of cooperation Posted Jan 7, 2009
Some people might argue:
"You can't be a Jew, Christian & Muslim at the same time."
Actually, the situation is further complicated by the fact:
There are ~ 71 sects of Jews, ~ 72 sects of Christians and
~ 73 sects of Muslims.
Would the same people argue that 'you can't be Catholic & Protestant
at the same time' for example.

Israeli/Palestinian conflict: where does the balance lie?

>Yeah, but why? The extremists (both sides) - what are they trying to achieve?
The Palestinian extremists want to destroy the state of Israel completely and replace it with Palestine within its historical borders. There seems to be a split between those who want to "push the Jews into the sea" (ie ethnic cleansing) and those who would allow Jews to remain, albeit not as Israelis but as Jewish Palestinians.
The Israeli extremists don't want an independent Palestine and want Israel to encompass the historical borders of Palestine. I'm not sure what they would want the status of the Palestinians to be, but given the hostility to "right of return" for Palestinians whose property was seized in 1948, I'd imagine they'd want a certain amount of ethnic cleansing of Gaza and the West Bank with Palestinians most probably being forced into neighbouring Arab states where their "fellow" arabs would be expected to look after them (something they've spectacularly failed to do to any Palestinian refugees within their borders).

Conversely to that, we have the moderates.
Moderate Palestinians (essentially elements of Fatah right now) want an independent Palestinian state in Gaza and the West Bank co-existing with its Israeli neighbour.
Moderate Israelis pretty-much agree to the same and Israel has slowly been moving along this route for a while with the establishment of the Palestinian authority and the dismantlement of the settlements in Gaza.
