I never did get ACE'd because I found myself here by default when Book of the Future closed down which has always made me feel somewhat semi-detached about the place - an indication of how important the welcome message is. And, yes I would reply to it if I ever got one...
now don't all rush at once

Sure I did... quite recently though.
I remember reading the ACE message (from Owlatron) and even using some of the links. No idea why I didn't answer back then, probably because I was so clueless about this whole place, but some time ago I was looking at my PS conversations and answering all sorts of old convos that have been dormant for months, and so I decided it might be time to answer this one as well. So I did, only a little over a year late... better late than never?
What I wonder is where it would have taken me if I _have_ replied right away, if anything would have been different. Probably so - but I guess I'll never know now.

I know that answering my ACE's welcome was a good thing! - As I didn't know then that I could just have "replied" her message, I went to her PS to leave a message instead, as I have already told earlier in this thread. That was lucky for me, coz that was how I found out that there are Guilds here, and as Reefgirl has a big link to the Craftguild on her PS I found my way there and found out how to become a member, and from there got to look at other researchers PS's and so on and so forth
It might have taken me longer to find out about the guilds otherwise...

Going to people's spaces is always a good idea. You spot someone you like, go over and see what sort of stuff they're into (guilds, clubs, conversations etc)... in other words, lurk. It's a really great way to start getting to know the place.

I didn't reply to my ACE's visit and now it looks like (s)he's not around very much (last posting in 2003).
Is it too late?

I remember back when I was ACEing, I always made a point of talking about something on the persons page by means of introduction. It did show at least show willing from the ACE side that you'd bothered to look at the person's space rather than arriving straight from the New Users hub. I must confess I did tend to deluge with links (bad form, that ostrich! ) but I moved from ACEing into GURUing just as the trend was picking up for ACE's to code a page up of their links and advice and post one link to that page with a "you might find some of these useful" or words to that effect and that did work a lot better.
As for getting replies, some did some didn't and I can't honestly say it was better or worse pre or post BBCification - however there were obviously a lot more researchers after we arrived at The Beeb so maybe the trends just became more er...apparent.
I always tried to sound as much like myself in my greetings and I always encouraged new users to either click on my name to be taken to my space where I had set up a where they could leave me a message or if they wanted to reply to my greeting they could click on the reply button at the bottom of my message. More often than not that worked just fine.
Clive.

Not sure when The Powers That Be are running their next recruitment drive.
If you want to be an ACE make sure you have a good look at this page first:
Aces
Stick your name down for consideration
<./>Aces-Recruit</.>
and spend some time in the interim really getting familiar with the site so if your called up you can welcome new users effectively to what is without doubt the froopiest site for Hitchikers all across the world.
And I didn't mention small furry creatures from Alpha Centuri once.
