the out-laws had a car with the cd player in the boot, you filled a cassette with half a dozen CDs and put it in the machine in the boot, buy it was opperated through a conventional car stereo system mounted front centre on the dash, so there was no need for a remote.....

The stock stereo on my Volvo didn't have a CD changer- it was a 1988 model and they weren't standard features back then. So there weren't any controls for the CD changer inside the cabin at all- and having the remote *was* handy... though I'll admit I never used it while actually *driving*. Parked or idling, but not driving. That's where passengers came in handy- though backseat drivers were never allowed.
I'd just gotten my Harmony remote recently when this thread was started; I have to say, it's really cool. It does indeed operate every IR device in the house, and the remote itself and the setup software (works with PC and Mac) are both really user-friendly.
