Ah, diplomacy in action:

"BROYE-LES-PESMES, France - A French space-surveillance radar has detected 20-30 satellites in low Earth orbit that do not figure in the U.S. Defense Department's published catalogue, a discovery that French officials say they will use to pressure U.S. authorities to stop publishing the whereabouts of French reconnaissance and military communications satellites."

This smacks somewhat of latent desperation ...

"Looking to prevent the next terrorist attack, the Homeland Security Department is tapping into the wild imaginations of a group of self-described "deviant" thinkers: science-fiction writers."

The death of BBC performer, producer and former Radio 4 controller David Hatch at age 68.

Hatch went to Cambridge alongside members of the Python team, (Cleese and Chapman), Tim Brooke-Taylor, Bill Oddie, Graeme Garden and Jo Kendall.

With most of the above he was a star of the seminal Sixties radio comedy show I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again, and as a radio producer' helped to launch its spin-off I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue, which is still running today.

As a senior Radio Light Entertainment exec, Hatch had a say in whether or not to commission an expensive science-fiction sitcom by a writer who was not known for delivering scripts on time. Given BBC Radio's attitude to "expensive and time-consuming to produce" and "science-fiction", it says a lot for his vision that he gave Douglas Adams a shot at getting his brainchild on air.

68 seems too young to die, and for a man with this degree of vision and a proven track-record in radio comedy to go, while for instance Margaret thatcher is still ranting strong, it seems doubly harsh.

He will be missed.

Sir David Hatch, 1939-2007
