Anyone understand TFT Screen Technical specs?

Only I am looking to buy one, hopefully in the 18" to 19" range.
But I am a tad confused. The refresh times mention on the different products seem to fall into either the 25ms or the approx 16ms categories. But the faster response times do not seem to equate with higher price. Indeed often slightly the opposite.
So if faster response times do not equal greater price
a) why are there still 25ms models out there
b) does it actually matter the difference between 125 and 16 ms for usage?
oh, and
c) are they maybe just using a different way of measuring it which gives a better figure?

When I read the header "anyone understand tft screen technical specs" I thought "I bet Ictoan does!" and even checked this thread just to confirm my suspicion that you'd be the first to answer.

I have done a bit of reading on this (I am going to be getting a bigger one soon) so I will try and tell what I have gleaned.

Prices/speed is less important than price/brandname as far as I have seen.
a) 25ms models are out there because they are still perfectly capable of office work.

b)Hopefully 16ms would give less 'ghosting' during fast screen changes (ie FPS games)

c)Now the way that they measure it does seem to be a bit dodgy. Mostly they measure the speed of a pixel changing from black to white and back. However, this does not give any idea of the speed of colour changes on the same monitor.

Best way would be to actually see the monitor that you are going to bye, doing the most intensive thing that you want, before you buy it.

Tomshardware has an excellent rundown on the problems with LCD screen specs and several reviews of 17" 12ms ones. Hope this helps, until later....

intelligent_moose smiley - blush Well, I strongly believe that there is always someone who knows something about a subject that you don't. Especially in technical areas.

And now, thanks to Crescent I know one of the problems of the speed rating on these screens. Something I knew not before, and that I can take into account.
smiley - cheers crescent, off to look to tom's anyway, that was the next stop!

If you find anything intresting could you post it here? My knowledge is still not as good as it could be for someone considering buying a new one smiley - smiley Until later...

Sho - employed again!

Been waiting to answer this one since I saw it at work this afternoon (can't log on from there)

I work for a company which makes these jobbies so I checked the specs I have. 16ms is fine for a monitor, so is 25ms. Although, i suspect if you really want to play fast moving games 16ms would be better.

However, I also checked against the TV display specs, and they're around 12ms at the mo, which is absolutely fine for the ball throwing test.

As for price, well the response time (measured for black to white because that takes the longest, colour changes are quicker) isn't the only factor, there are the things like the colour saturation (apparently) and the contrast ratio and other stuff

none of which helps really.

But, and this isn't a plug, I find that (as with all electronics) generally although there isn't that much between the best and the best of the rest (if you see what I mean) there is a big difference between the best and the cheapo stuff. I'd go for a brand over a no-name. But then, I would say that, wouldn't i? smiley - winkeye
