Anti-snob
Is mise Duncan Posted Nov 21, 2000
For those of you that are wondering - yes I'm still convinced that "nasty nick" was in contact with the makers of Big Brother above and beyond that disclosed to the other players.
Incidentally - what I don't understand is why the viewing figures went UP when it was revealed in advance that someone had won. Surely the "fun" in watching WWTBAM is not knowing whether they're going to lose all that money at the next turn?
P.S. "Begins" - also six letters, but a nicer word than "Almost" or "Abhors"...

A good way to be a snob is not to own a television!

Kaeori, you must overcome your distaste of 'crass materialism' for the sake of your art, vis., this thread. The *real* value in WWTBAM is being able to answer the questions (correctly) and the odd gems of language that surface. Go get yourself a TV (and the appropriate license, of course) - you don't *have* to watch the rubbish bits (I watch very little, but wouldn't be without it).
Snobbery (modern-day varieties) was much easier to observe *before* the dumbing down of R4. The 'Start the Week' programme I refered to previously was frequently derided as being a bunch of snobs being snobby, but that completely missed the sometimes amazing content of the discussion. No, I'm not a snob. I have a traditional working-class background (dad was a bus driver, mum was an accounts clerk), but I received a good education which ignited a number of sparks within ... one of which is a touch of sureal lunacy which I've displayed here often.
Where do snobs live ? .... in the snobbery, of course.

I guess snobs would need shoes as well
Still no TV is a thing to be proud of in this day and age...
Box with moving pictures and it talks to you, pah I say. Enough of your idiotic flights of fancy, next you'll be telling me that people have been beyond this earth...

Dear W - was the cobblers directed at anyone or anything in particular ?
Please be more specific when you put the boot in, don't be a heal, show you have a sole ...

Nikki-D Posted Nov 21, 2000
Honestly, Phil. Have you people no will power ?
"Of course we have a TV, darling, but we *never* watch it."
I'm having trouble with the contradictive tensions between Phil's 'beyond earth' assetion, and his membership of the H2G2 community ! (unless he is thinking of Galaxy in the chocolate bar/candy sense).

I think very soon there will be a brand of snobbery based around only watching terrestrial TV channels. What with cable/satelite/digital those who only watch the freebie ones beamed through the aether are getting quite rare. This will no doubt create a sort of hierarchy, with Sky Sports Extra viewers at one end and someone who once read about a crystal wireless set in the Times at the other. Isn't it strange how those who are perceived to be at the bottom have all the gadgets while those at the top have none?
I think I have wandered well away from the point (at least three streets down, just past the chemist) and am beginning to ramble. Ah there has been nothing decent on television since Dr. Who went off I say.

Kaeori Posted Nov 21, 2000
I have a very good reason for not having a TV. I'll let you know when I've worked out what it is.
Given Pheroneous's assertion that the unconscious snob is a charming creature whereas the conscious snob is real low life (I paraphrase, of course) - do you think there is any way I could consciously become an unconscious snob?
Naturally, I'm conscious of the fact that unconsciously your conscience may conclude that a conscious effort to be unconsciously yet conscientiously snobbish may, in all conscience, be cobblers.
Perhaps I should aim to be a slob instead.

Beautifully done, K. Have a with your
.
Talking of slobbery, please may I have a minor rant, TV related, wearing my BOF hat.
The Royle Family - Why?
Thank you for your indulgence.
And a quick flashback to the subject of the thread. "Clacking" as in dominoes. Perfect onomatopoeia.

Snob used to mean shoemaker
Why they should have been particularly snobbish giving rise to the derivation, alas I am unable to tell you
Kindly admire my patience in holding back long enough to get one of you to bite
(also the glancing reference to the original post - I'm going home now as it's 11.45 pm So you don't have to suspend me for a hundred posts. There'll be at least that number when I get back. G'night)

Perhaps I should have shook the old walking stick at the french windows, or ended my last post with "But of course, I was very very drunk"* Nikki
*which proves he has seen TV as it's the catchphrase of a character of the Fast Show...

Which question, the £1,000,000 one?
I cannot answer the question, The Royle Family, why? as I've not seen this particular piece of televisual programming.
Unless you are refering to the question in post 1 where you asked about a certain phrase whose mere mention in this thread now brings the regulars to much deride any person who should so utter it.

(a)Who was Elanor of Aquitaine married to?
(b)Because "no one ever lost money underestimating the sophistication of the British"
(c)We've already had the answer to THAT question, it involved boxes of meccano and you'll be able to look it up in the index soon.
Of course nobody answers _my_ questions, I notice...

Not the ultimate question, just one of Dunc's
Nikki-D Posted Nov 22, 2000
Poor Duncan (Bless!)
Many's the time I've introduced a word or question into the thread, only to see it fall by the wayside, forgotten, destitute, family to support etc. I've even tried refering back to it and answering it myself without getting any 'bites'.
It's just a question of timing, Duncan. Sometimes your postings send us all off on a glorius tangent with a blaze of postings from all. Othertimes, postings drop to the ground like a damp squab.
Don't be disheartened. You're a valued friend to us all.

Well done, Kaeori! You answered the question without any of us noticing! There are even people apologising to Duncan, when the answer is staring us all in the face.
Key: Complain about this post
