How do you celebrate Samhain (Halloween)?
Serephina Posted Nov 2, 2003
Did you not give them enough sweeties?
We didn't have many trick or treaters..just the neighbours kids.
Is it something thats dying out a bit now?

I "celebrated" Halloween by bribing little ogres into not egging or chucking flour at my house or car.
I am promised that this is not an American import. However, it feels pretty much like it took of in the UK with the release of ET.
I also love fire works (actually I really do) and now I am treated to them every night from late October to mid November. Great.
Now I'm off to find my pipe and slippers and grumble about the lefties like Michael Howard who have infiltrated tha Tory party. And I'm looking forward to the start of the fox hunting season. Reckon we should turn the dogs on those upstarts in the commons. That would teach them thier place.

Trick or Treating is *not* an American import- it's part of the tradition of 'Mischief Nights', which are still practiced in the Midlands. May Day, Christmas Eve, Halloween and Shrove Tuesday are all Mischief Nights. They're times when all the normal rules are suspended for adults and children alike.
I had three lots of trick or treaters before I went out for the night- I threw buckets or water on all of them, a perfectly acceptable response around here- it's not just the kids that get to do the tricking, they all know when they knock on the door the householders might have a trick for them. In return the house got pelted with eggs, only three though, so I reckon three eggs for eight drenched kids is a good exchange
We then went to the pub and partied. Again, normal rules suspended, last year I got kidnapped

I always thought it was a mixture of a few old traditions.

Tricking is certainly not an Irish tradition, although Treating is.
