Would you pay for h2g2
Mu Beta Posted Aug 20, 2003
I would. If, as has been suggested elsewhere, this site would take on 'newspaper' status, then $/£10-20 would not be a lot to pay, for all the entertainment I have had from this site. AND I would continue to Sub-edit out of free will, which is nice of me.
I hasten to add to anyone who has not read the aforementioned thread that, to the best of my knowledge, such changes are not afoot, and h2g2 will remain free for the foreseeable future.

I reckon that if the people who left were the ones who don't like paying for anything, the quantity of Researchers might go down but the quality of writing and discussion would go up.

I don't wish to turn this into a political debate, but my right-wingedness suggests to me that the really valuable people to the site WILL pay, and that we'd eliminate those who don't really care.
Hello? Have I alienated the entire site?

Yes, but we wouldn't get newbies that might have become great contributors. Everybody's a newbie once, and we might not get the future ones

Ooh - too many simulposts.
I agree about the newbies. Obviously we'd give people a 3-month trial, in the manner of any good internet company (and AOL).

There is a certain website, where it's free to anyone, where it's free to register but you are encouraged to contribute £15 a year to keep the site non commerical.

I juast thought it'd be nice to have a track of longest threads, longest (non-loonie) postings, and that sort of thing, that's all. Not volunteering. No, not me, no way. Too busy.

I may lean to the left in my politics B, but I'm very old-fashioned and conservative in many ways too

It all depends on the amount and what is included for the price. If it was something like £20 a year and covered all the DNA sites, other BBC sites and a shed load of exclusive content then it would be a definate yes.
Key: Complain about this post
