h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

I find it hard to believe that the PTB are not lobbying hard to ensure the right result in the BBC's "Big Read" contest or enquiry or whatever you care to call it.
It should be pretty obvious that there can be only one contender: Douglas Adams for his Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy, without whom you would not be being urged to vote for the obvious. (If you see what I mean.)
The Beeb claims to have sophisticated software to prevent personation so I shall refrain from issuing my customary advice to "vote early, vote often" but please make sure that you do vote for DNA. There is a lot of dross about that could "win" by your inaction.

Even on h2g2, Douglas Adams is not our favourite author. A poll is being taken at the moment and last time I looked, it was Terry Pratchett at the top of the list.

I wouldn't vote for DNA - *looks around for baying lynch mob with pitchforks* - because the book isn't *that* good. I see Neal Stephenson's "Snow Crash" being bandyed around as a *must-read* for h2g2 people more than HHGTTG these days. And I have read it, and it is stunning...

I wonder what their 'sophisticated' detection software does?
If it just issues a cookie, then you could delete it and vote again.
If it detects your ip address then you could go offline, then on again, and it will be dynamically re-assigned and you can vote again.
If you're using broadband and have a static ip then as long as you're using Linux your can re-assign it yourself, and vote again.

Read them all. Well. I am just working my way through the last half of Cryptonomicon now. He is an excellent writer.

My choise was DNA though.

I voted for John Brunner's 'Stand on Zanzibar'. Much as I love the collected works of DNA and PTerry and Neal Stephenson, Brunner's is still the best single book I have ever read.

I'm sorry, but I weon't be voting for Duglas ADams either. I read several of the hichhiker books, but I didn;t really like them.

Personally I went for 1984 by Orwell, fantastic book
