The Fermi Paradox
Flake99 Posted Mar 13, 2003
'Are we alone?' went right down the rankins, so I started 'fermi'. Then, after hours of non response, 'are we alone?' went straight back up! And they've both been going ever since!
Sorry!

At the moment we have a religion arguement going on in 'are we alone?'

You've opened up a new possibility, FF... maybe they're getting reality tv and chortling. To tamper with our culture would mean the contamination of such entertainment.

So, have we concluded anything? Is there a general consensus?

Blatherskite the Mugwump - Bandwidth Bandit Posted Mar 13, 2003
I think the general consensus is that we know almost nothing. Making sweeping statements of any sort about the possibility of and nature of life on other planets is premature.

Bornon... I think he's doing it to confuse us... probably some form of Alien mind-altering trick... they're after our water see
ah, there's nothing like holding a convo on different threads...

Has this arguement ground to a halt? what does that mean? is everyone bored, or do we agree here?

Well, speaking for myself, I was out at the pharmacist's (or "chemist's" for you UKers) getting something to make me feel better, but that's another topic entirely ... what with this headache I'm just here to distract myself ... wait, where was I? Oh yeah, about this thread that has suddenly grown faster than the bugs/virii in my body ... ok, ok, I swear I'll let it lie now ...
I don't know if everyone's come to agreement (in this thread anyway) but it sure seems to be a nodding consensus of a sort that says we don't know enough to back up what Fermi said more than half a century ago. I wonder what Fermi would think nowadays of that claim?
