"Should Chief Gordon Lightfoot reinstate the Saskatchewan Rhinoceros hunt?

Yes the Native Vets have always, and still do, get a raw deal at every turn. Its a shame that people weren't as ready to stand up and shout 60+ years ago, as they are now. Maybe a campaigne should be started for a memorial to the Native Vet, somewhere - Ottawa? The sad case of Tommy Prince is a good case in point.
The Service clubs are guilty as sin of rejecting certain Vets. The Merchant Navy, I believe are welcome at the ANAF, at least we had an old friend at a club who was Merchant Navy. The same club welcomes Vietnam Vets to their parades, but I don't think they can be members, not sure. There was a lot of controversy in Brandon about allowing German soldiers, stationed for training at CFB Shilo, to use the club facilities. Through a minor revolution, another militant in my family got them a welcome, and they were an asset to the club. The Legion rejects both these groups. Sometimes I think this whole nation has to grow up.

post 2137, so canada is only human after-all. Mudhooks, those photos re-enforce the knowledge that dogs aren't that bright.

The Canadian Aboriginal War Veterans Monument is located, here in Ottawa. However, it was the hard work and dedication of Native veterans, the Native community, and donors who footed the bill, not the Canadian government. The monument is, therefore, not an "official" war memorial, like the National War Memorial. http://www.grizz.ca/aboriginal_war_monument_4.html
It is located just down the bill below the National Memorial, in a park. It is, however, right by the street, so visible, and not hidden away.

I remember in the 60's going to the movies and being told the native kids were supposed to stay in the balcony. I remember in the late 60's that all of us wanted to see what it was like up there so we went up and made friends. I remember that by 1970 nobody even talked about it and we all got along like gangbusters. That is the kind of integration that I am proud of as a Canadian, not legislative but logical and natural. The public face was shameful and late in resolving itself but still better than a lot of alternatives.

Sorry but I'm going to interrupt with something not aligned. I was inspired by the links of mudhooks and took some photos while walking home from work last night and signed up to fotki

add electrical current and it's bad for our health. Standard practise is that if a hole opens up they cover it with rocks

(as mudhooks knows, there's something not quite right about my family album.)
Zoomer, have you looked in Peer Review lately? The Canadiana gap is being addressed a bit. I've put 11 entries in there over the last few days.

Well done!
Except for the caribou entry which really is an entry about one thing with one fact.....
Not that I mind, I'm off to the kitchen to try and mix one......

Personally, my favourites of this batch have little to do with Canada: Clever Hans, the headless American chicken, and that one I just put in tonight.

Growing up in Ottawa, most of the people I knew (beyond my own family, of course) were WASP. One of the exceptions were the Browns who lived across the street from us. The only Native people I knew until I went off to college in Toronto....
The balcony of the theatre reminds me of our Crossing Guard Saturday get-togethers. They used to have monthly events for all the school crossing-guards in town. We would get a gift (once we got a wallet and another time "Shak-A-Puddin'") and a matinee at the Capital Theatre. Imagine a huge cinema packed to the brim with 1000 or so screaming, stomping, pop-corn tossing kids.... I can recall the balcony above us shaking with the kids carrying on above, likely not watching the Elvis Presley, Batman, of Jerry Lewis film on the screen.

What does WASP stand for. I see it often and so much time has passed that I feel I should know already. I'm asking anyway

I don't think I ever had Shake-a-puddin and I never would have thought of it again. Thank you, Mudhooks. I'm a child again.

Here's a sort of timely news story:

Come on Paul, give them the money!
Also, remember all the gollylaggin about a public enquiry on the Maher Arar case? Months of delay and mucking around. Now the Government was promising a big public enquiry as a result of the Auditor General's report days before it was released.

From me as well for the Shake-a-puddin. I too am transported back yea these many years.....but only if it was chocolate.
Now, what was that stuff where you licked the wooden stick and put it in flavoured sugar to lick it off?
As to the Martin government, I have great hopes that things like the auditor general and *watchdog* groups will live up to their original descriptions.
(And that's not just because he says he likes BC....)

btw, again for the photos, everyone. Anhaga you have a fine group of friends and family by the look of them. One of these days I'll post some photos of myself and my rag-tag group as well. Then you will realise that I am not in fact a grizzled 52 year old but an elementary student in Duncan, B.C.
