Dragonflys?

Post 1

Hi peeps,
due to an on going discussion at work I would like to ask if any one can clarify if drogonflys have a sting. Now, I am pretty sure that they do not but people have argued strongly enough to make me unsure. I have tried to look it up but have found out nearly everything else there is to know but have not yet found an entry that catagorically states 'no you knobber, dragonflys do/don't have a sting', yours hopefully,
Eldendir

Not that I want to cast any doubts on your intellect in any way but is this an educated guess like mine or is this swimming in a sea of truth and fact?
Is there any way to get evidence of this so that I can take it to work and show the guys whilst saying ner ner ne ner ner?

In as much as stinging insects didn't evolve until the Cretaceous period [less than 150Mya] and Dragonflys appeared in the Carboniferous Period [more than 350Mya]...
yes...
I don't know where you could get evidence to wave at them apart from buying a book on Insects that has picture of Dragonflys and Mayflys as well as Bees and Wasps...

They have no sting.Seen enough of them in life and death to know that.
Beautiful insects-I have some silver dragonfly earrings which I wear all the time.

Incog.

Well thanks Stealth,
I have tried various on line encyclopaedias which didn't really give evidence one way or the other but I will resume the search as I now feel a bet might be in order if I play this right. E.

Zantic - Who is this woman??

Quick Google for dragonfly found me the british dragonfly society. they state quite firmly that dragonflies do not sting or bite...much as they might wish too...

they do not have a sting...but their ovipositor is often mistaken for one..

Above is the FAQ page where I got the info...

Zantic - Who is this woman??

There are several different kinds of dragonfly. From the quick look I had at the above website, the majority cannot harm a human even though they try. Then, of course we have the mimics which look enough like the originals to fools predators etc. Maybe it was one o them? I have no idea really, I'm just on a course of work avoidance... smiley - winkeye

KerrAvon - could it have been a horsefly? They're (doublecheck - yup, right spelling) vicious brutes.

I once found a dragonfly in my third floor bedroom, miles from any stream, in the middle of a seaside town - how come? Scared the willies out of me - it made *such* a nise against the window!

Nope, I know what a horsefly looks like- I've been bitten by one too. It wasn't as bad as that.
