Always remember that parties lose elections, nobody wins them.

Not sure I entirely agree with that - if the Conservative And Unionist Party Of Great Britain had turned up in 2001, things might've been different in 2005. There we go, that's politics for you. I guess TBGB is due to lose the next one. smiley - tongueout

Please list Tony Blair's achievements in office.

flakey-lady.... you lookin' at me punk?

no i don't reddy freddy because they are not making people actualy stop smoking... that would be cruel and vicious.. just controlling where people smoke so that non smokers are no longer affected... thats all dear.... so not oppressing

its a clear case of whats fair.. and lets not forget the barstaff who have been forced to work in smoking environments for far too long...the case of roy castle killed thru passsive pub smoking... as many will be non smokers how unfair has it been for them to work in all that..

as a barmaid myself some years ago... this law is trying to be fair... smokers will survive by popping out for a ciggy.. most smokers are considerate anyway.. they will grit their teeth and get on with it...

Well I guess the main one is gay civil unions, but also fox hunting ban, new pub licensing and a few other little bits and pieces like that.

Perhaps it balances out the scary authoritarian side?

Anyone but the Tories smiley - grovel

and Roy Castle died of cancer. Where is there any proof it was caused by passive smoking?

roymondo of course no one is forced to work in a bar... but the fact is bar work is often taken up by students who can't work days etc.. as was the case with myself my 3 nights a week helped me while i was a single student mum...

you can't be arguing that all bar staff don't really need their job???

also the general concensus has always been that roy castle did indeed die due to passive smoking.. or so the news stories go....

Some control. Exactly the same "control" as fox-hunting.

I'm oppressed.smiley - sadface

Let's start a campaign - "Free the British 20 million"smiley - smiley

Funny when you see it like that - 20 million people banned from doing something that is not illegal. smiley - wah

There are other jobs, and plenty of smoking students. Sorry, that argument doesn't hold water.

24hr establishments employing students: Tesco, Shell, Esso, Costcutter...

flakey-lady post 109: 'but the fact is bar work is often taken up by students who can't work days etc.'

My last post was in reply to that.

>> Well I guess the main one is gay civil unions, but also fox hunting ban, new pub licensing and a few other little bits and pieces like that. <<

So, after 9 years in office, the principal achievement of the Prime Minister of the 5th largest economy in the world is to allow same-sex unions?

What other "bits and pieces"?

nah your having a laugh raymondo.. pub workers might actually like their job.. i used to like it, except for the smoking....basically they are entitled to work in a smoke free atmosphere as are tesco workers.. although i had to endure a smoking canteen for 7 yrs until a few months ago....

when i worked in a pub with 4 or 5 colleagues i don't remember any of them smoking... a job is a job and some can't be too choosy roymondo..

end of the day the government has decided that it is in everyones best interests to ban it in public places.. i agree with it.... end of.

if i am to be 'oppressed' for that by you smokers so be it... as i've said before everyone has a right to their opinion... and now i'm going to bed this is quite late enough for me..

If I don't like the conditions I don't sign the contract. I know there aren't contracts in pub work but it would appear you liked bits of the job and not others. You weighed it up and accepted bar work in a smokey pub. You could have turned it down.
