Who is the best Bond (I say Timothy Dalton)
Citizen S Posted Nov 25, 2002
Brosnan is just ideal. Connery a close second.
I don't think Timothy Dalton was good enough to look at or convincingly cool enough. Guys always get perfect Bond girls to ogle so gals should get an eyeful too.

OUZ, I agree with Dalton kicks all their behinds (Sean almost gets there with his first outing, but quickly falls by the wayside ). Anyhoo Meester Bond is a wimp all those gadgets to hide behind, I prefer my shadow executives in the raw, so to say. Quiller could take Bond any day Until later....

I think that Daltons' portrayal of Bond was far too earnest, but maybe that was because we had all been so used to Moores' tongue in cheek style. The Bond that appears in print is a ruthless, sometimes sadistic professional killer with a very dry line in humour, but Connery being the first screen Bond, set a precedence. I think that Brosnan is very good, and he succeeds in striking a balance of Connerys' coolness with Moores' wisecracking.

*surprised noone has mentioned Bob Monkhouse yet*
Monkhouse
Chronicargonaut Posted Nov 25, 2002
Bob Monkhouse- that in relation to Moores' smutty one liners?
Pierce Brosnan (so it says in the Express today) says that he thinks Paul Bettany (Chaucer, A Knights' Tale) would be his choice as a new replacement. My preference would be Hugh Jackman(X Men), and yes, he can do an English accent.

Hugh Jackman was he wolverine
Bob Monkhouse was the first person to play Bond on a radio play

Yes, he was Wolverine. He does an excellent english accent in Kate & Leopold. I think that Bob Holness was the first Bond (on radio in South Africa)
Mondays...?
Chronicargonaut Posted Nov 25, 2002
Has that anything to do with Bob Monkhouse/Holness? Incidentally, I hate Mondays, especially work.

Who's Hugh Jackman when he's at home, wouldn't he be a bit young. Rembember, Bond isn't getting any younger. Maybe an older Bond should take over, and get back to the style of the books (ushers Tim Dalton).
I saw Die Another Day, and its all starting to get silly now. What was the plot, hidden under set piece after set piece. After GoldeEye (which had been written with Dalton in mind), they just got it back to clumsy plots. I liked Daltons movies for several reasons.
1. The closeness to the Bond of the books (depressive, not fond of job)
2. The fact that the Bond girls were pushed into the background (In the Living Daylights he never goes as far as to take his suit off, and even turns someone down.
3. The fact that Dalton was such a great actor.

Bond films have now become formulaic, though that isn't a bad thing. Most of the books have been adapted, so therefore, any future films will not resemble the original books. Also the public have got so used to the gadgets, girls and over the top stunts from the Bond films that taking the franchise back to its roots would be a backward step and kill off the franchise.
Thats what I think anyway. I agree that Bond should be about 40, but I still think Hugh Jackman is a good choice.
The daftest suggestions for Bond I've heard are Robbie Williams and Clive(wooden)Owen

Well Bond films have progressed through chronologically so therefore he must be at least 60 by now. In fact the official age is 60.
The Bond films have just descended into pure action, not the spy films they were to begin with. Tis sad.
Bring back Dalton...

I don't think Eon would consider Dalton. He's past history, and he probably couldn't be persueded anyway. Although his portrayal was very similar to the books, he still couldn't shake off the genteel RSC image.
He tried very hard to make Bond a cold, killing machine with a nice line in dry wit, but too late, we were used to the smarm and safari suited spy. I am looking forward to the latest Bond film, whether it is like the books or not.
I think Brosnan, when he first won the role wanted to remake OHMSS, was this going to happen, or was it a wishful thinking?
Bring back Niven! The David Niven's for Bond Campaign starts here!
Are you with me?

Its just a matter of time. Eon was very upset to lose Dalton. I will succeed through hard grit and sullen determination to get Dalton back.

Dave Niven..good choice, probably not as old as Moore when he made A View To A Kill. But Dalton had the ruthlessness to set his villians on fire personally...with a match.

Chronicargonaut Posted Nov 25, 2002
Yes, its a shame he's no longer with us.
I've always thought it would be a cool idea to put a 'Bond' agent into a World War 2 setting, if they ever run out of ideas for the more modern stories. Everyone knows that in the films, 'Bond' is a psuedonym, and that there were more than one Bond. Agreed?

Old Uncle Zarniwoop Posted Nov 25, 2002
I didn't know that. In fact thats untrue because in License To Kill (a Dalton movie) he says that he will never re-marry after he lost the woman from OHMSS (Diana Rigg). Now unless Dalton and Lazenby are the same person...mmm

Chronicargonaut Posted Nov 25, 2002
They're not. Witness the beginning of OHMSS, when Bond says "This never happened to the other fella" whilst packing his briefcase. The piece of music used for the pre credits by John Barry is even called 'This Never Happened To The Other Fella'. I kid ye not.
