I think there is a special word to describe the situation when an art gallery has an exhibition of a 'guest' artist's work - usually for a limited period of time.
Can anyone put me out of my misery by suggesting the appropriate word?

Retrospective?
Individual exposition?
Group exposition?
Vernissage?

Hmmm, possibly 'retrospective' but I don't think that is quite the one I was after. Think I may have to stick with 'exhibition'.

The situation I want to describe is that of a local gallery of mine. It houses a permanent collection of works by a specific artist but every once in a while they have a......a.....THINGY of another artist's work...

Is that not just a gallery show?

I figured that from what you sdaid abo´ve, but all what sprang to mind, was ' Wanderaustellung' , because that's what they often are. In case of other local (guest) artists, though
I'll give it some more thought and come back to you later

I've checked a few galleries' websites (the Tates & the National) and all they use is 'exhibition'. I'm pretty sure I've heard a specific word too, though.
The only one I can think of of the top of my head is 'installation' but that's generally used for pieces created with the specific exhibition environment in mind (such as those in Tate Modern's turbine hall).

How about "LOAN EXHIBITION"?

There seem to be a few of them out there, after all...

I'm just going to stick with temporary exhibitions I think - I was convinced there was a proper word though! I think it might have been 'retrospective' that I had in my head but that doesn't realy describe the situation - if you must know, every once in a while Timmy Mallett (yes, him) exhibits his etchings in our local gallery...
I'm writing an entry on my village and wanted to mention something about the gallery.
