Apparently proper kilts cover you properly, that's using the enormous square of folded cloth. Modern kilts aren't designed for the commando kilt-user.

They've got little blobs of plastic covering the sharp ends but they come off and then the thing comes through the material and suddenly stabs you when you're least expecting it.
