Long lived sitcoms and TV series that should have been shortlived...

Hello, morning everyone, (sorry for butting in)

It's funny you should mention UK Gold. We got it for a month for a free tryout. All that seemed to be on was 'Allo 'Allo and Hi de Hi - they'd be top on my list. I'd also nominate 'Sorry' - Ronnie Corbett should have stuck to his chair. And Three Up Two Down. Complete pants.

I've actually got a bit of time for Sorry. The longer it ran the darker and weirder it got...
Pointless trivia: Ronnie Corbett was hired by a lower eshalon casting guy to play one of the apes in the opening of 2001:A Space Odyssey...Corbett was super-chuffed and trained as hard as he could to perfect a monkeyish gait. The day of filming arrives and the great Stanley Kubrick (R.I.P) walks onto the set, takes one look at Corbo and tells him to get off the set because he's cack. Corbett actually admits to this shame in his autobiography (which I absent-mindedly flicked one afternoon whilst mooching through Borders!)

Oh yes 3 up 2 down was horrendous.

It starred Michael Elphic.

He was a working class grunt forced to flat share with his son't Mother-in Law who was really posh and stuck up. They lived downstairs, his son, wife and baby lived upstairs.

One more...

Yeeeeeeuuuuuurrrrggggggg!

Three up two down was pretty poor I grant you.

Wasn't M.E. also in A Fine Romance with Judy Dench (sp)

Michael Elphick was also in Withnail and I which is thought by many to be the greatest British film ever made.
The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin I find to be one of the maddest shows ever and Leonard Rossiter is a genius (he also succeeded where Corbett failed...Lennie has a speaking role in 2001!)

Are you suggesting that the Corb has such unsightly body hair that he could pass for a chimp? I'm not disagreeing with you but I'm not sure if he's that hairy...Burt Reynolds on the other hand...

Perhaps 2001, would have been even more critically acclaimed, if a hairy Ronnie C, had appeared and done the 'fork handles/four candles' skit in mid space.

No it wasn't Michael E in A Fine Romance, it was that droopy faced man who was in Butterflies. Can't remember his name. Ummm.... Geoffrey Palmer! That's it! I can't for the life of me remember why I liked A Fine Romance, perhaps I was misguided that everything Judi Dench is in is totally fantastic.

Am I the only person in the world not to like Withnail and I?

Big connection problems!!!
Anna, you are the only person I know who doesn't like Withnail!
Orcus, Kudos on digging the Perrin!
My last post was a tribute to a two Ronnies sketch.

Just so you know.

I doubt it, my Mum didn't seem to impressed when I got it for her - one of those gifts you immediately regret smiley - erm

I think it appeals more if you can identify with it. My student years were lived in a similar frenzy to that film and my first house's kitchen was *worse* than their's so that sort of thing helps smiley - winkeye

I saw it when I was a student and as far as I was concerned Withnail and I was a fly-on-the-wall documentary! Too close to home, I guess smiley - winkeye

For me the genius of Withnail is the fact that the more you watch it, the richer it gets...its far,far more than a stoner comedy (not that I have a problem with stoner comedies!)-it's a film about friendship, true friendship and the death of an era, its texts and subtexts are so rich and perpetually striking...and nobody can swear like Bruce Robinson, the screenplay crackles with an intensity that few other screenwriters have matched before or since (maybe David Mamet). I do however agree with Orcus that it ain't a movie to show your mam-unless she is interested in the construction of a Camberwell Carrot. I couldn't not go off on one about Withnail without a quote so here we go..."Even a stopped clock tells the right time twice a day, and for once I'm inclined to believe that Withnail is right...we are indeed drifting into the arena of the unwell."

God, I love that film!
