But what's funny about covers, as I've tried to show with some of my citations, is that some covers end up being the "definitive" - you try telling people that Tainted Love by someone other than Soft Cell, or Twist and Shout not part of the Lennon McCartney ouvre.
I once had an office full of people telling me I was delusional for saying that Cher had covered a Bucks Fizz track.
It was terrible... took me years to get out of that asylum

I find Jim's musical taste very much like the Curate's Egg to be honest-'Parts of it are excellent'.

Hang on, someone other than me remembers Frazier Chorus? Blimey. Oh, and it was "Anarchy In The UK", not "God Save The Queen".
And talking of "Spirit In The Sky", Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's version is very good, except that they've changed the lyrics, renamed it "Spread Your Love" and claimed it as one of their own compositions...

Great Western Lettuce (no.51) Just cut down the fags instead Posted May 28, 2002
Red Hot Chili Peppers did a great version of Higher Ground by Stevie Wonder.
Kirsty McCall's Days by the Kinks was just as good. But perhaps not better.
Motorhead did a far superior cover of Enter Sandman by Metallica.
Don't know who originally wrote it, but 'Dizzy' by Vic Reeves and the Wonderstuff was great, as was The Wonderstuff's cover of Slade's 'Coz I luv you' and Vic Reeves and EMF doing 'I'm a Believer' - (was that The Monkees???)

Yep, it was the Monkees, although everyone and their dog has covered it since. And it was written by Neil Diamond, bizarrely enough.
Has anyone mentioned Cud's version of Status Quo's "Down Down" yet?

As long as no one mentions Quo's blasphemous cover of John Fogerty's 'Rocking All Over the World'...

Terrorvison covered 'Down Under' by Men at Work, and that was superb.

The worst cover I've heard is Ian Brown covering Redemption Song by Bob Marley.
But his cover of Billie Jean by Michael Jackson is nothing short of outstanding.

Frazier Chorus - Dream Kitchen - right?
I never said Only Living Boy was *better* I hopd to say just that I thought that it was *good*
Worst cover - it's very very hard not to say Jive Bunny - do compilations count?

Just thought - I like the Pet Shop Boys version of You Are Always on my Mind, but I have a feeling I may be in a minority.

In that case - definitely not.
But for me the record for worst cover just keeps getting broken - special mention to the grinning goons for their 'Tragedy' Oh yes.

Sorry Abi - doesn't count. I should have put a proviso in at the start that any cover that's *bound* to be an improvement is disallowed.

Good -
Jimi Hendrix - All along the watch tower (written by Bob Dylan)
Bad -
The Offspring - Hey Joe (not written by jimi hendrix, but i can't be bothered to go and read the liner notes to find out who really wrote it)

Speaking of NWA, Rage against the machine did a great cover of F**k the police.
This will go down badly but I thought Ugly Kid Joe's cover of Cats in the Cradle was excellent.
And Bad Manners doing My Girl Lollipop is good n'all.
