-The Sirens Of Titan by Vonnegut, when I can be bothered.-
I have nominated Salo the Tralfamadorian as an action smiley. His head(?) is a hand with his eye in the centre. When someone says something stupid, Salo feels embarassed for him. Then he slowly closes his hand (head?) over his eye.
A very handy smiley on some of these threads.

"I didn't know that the bigger fella had ever written a book (or anything
else)...what's it all about?"
It's a thriller written from the point of view of a sock monkey.
No, really.

I'm just coming to the end of Special topics In Calamity Physics, by Marisha Pessl*.
The story is taht of a precocious american girl who almost witnesses the death of one of her teachers...(I'm not giving anything away here, you can find that out from the back of the book).
It's not quite in the league of The Secret History, as the blurb-writer would have you believe, but it's definitely up there. I'm really enjoying it!

"The Sex Lives of Cannibals", by J. Maarten Troost. It's a travelogue about the author's and his girlfriend's "adventures" while living for a couple of years in a tiny South Pacific atoll. So far, it's hilarious.
I'm going to have to find and read the Penn Jilette book as well. I've got a "thing" for sock monekys.

Is it true that they give their victims a hard on, so there's more to eat?

Cheeky monkey!
This book really makes life in Tarawa sound interesting. And very much like a place where I would not like to live.

Collapse by Jared Diamond, fascinating! Also very, very depressing...
And at the same time, 'Last Guardian', by the awesome David Gemmell.

Rereading "Catcher in the Rye" by JD Salinger. I'd forgotten how poignant and powerful it is. Something to be said for going back over your youthful "must read" list!

I am reading the book Learn to Mediate by David Fontana from my public library in Thurrock, Essex. It is the Art of Tranquillity, Self-Wareness and Insight. After reading this booking and practising the mediation exercises, I will be able to grasp the basics of mediation.
