The abbreviation for apartment notwithstanding, I napped, he napped, she napped, inapt.
I napt because it wasn't fit to sleep in.
Makes perfect sense to me because I can picture the puzzle setter having an epiphany, one of those very subjective moments of glorious realisation about the way the mind interprets words differently in print or in speech.
So of course "in a PT" works for me too. Especially if the course is early and one would rather sleep in than get up and get fit.

"Not fit to sleep in it"
If "IT" is spread out as "I - - - T"
Then 'nap' will FIT inside I---T.
Though why a nap is 'not fit' still eludes me. Unless as I suggested the puzzle setter was having a moment and somehow meant all of the above including PT in some magic cyclical brain fart.

Chambers has:
INAPT: not apt: unfit, or unqualified.
So there you are. An unusual word, but in the dictionary.

jwf - that's a good breakdown of the 'inapt' clue!
...is anyone noticing my awful puns, or just choosing to ignore them....hehehe

Please allow me to clear up the confusion here. I do far too many criptic crosswords and that's a fairly good clue by the usual standards.
Not fit to sleep in it. (6)
INAPT
"Not fit" - a synonym for inapt.
"to sleep" - nap (okay, so the "to" disappears, that's normal)
And as ~jwf~ already surmised the whole is "nap" in "it", thus "inapt".
P.S. I didn't think "inapt" was an unusual word. Certainly not by crossword standards.

Well bagpuss (what a great id)
Cryptic crosswords are cool, however sometimes .... what's slapping you around the face isn't obvious...

You are right to bow down; I once got three answers in in Azed in the Observer. I think they were correct too.

I like your sense of modesty and I'm duly impressed. Not being a talented lateral thinkin cruciverthingy and more rather a crucifier of words n' inventer of morphemes as I go, this is easily done..

Since we are being off-topic at the moment, is there anywhere on HooToo where I can post puzzling cryptic clues and get people to help me work them out? Y'see I've always wanted to be able to do cryptic crosswords. And I know a lot of it is down to in-jokes and following certain rules. I don;t want to just ask and get the answer cos that's no fun. And usually i can look at the answers in the next edition for those I didn;t get and go 'oh, of course!' . But all to often I still can;t work the thing out even when I have the answer (like the above!). I have a lot to live up to, my grandfather was one of those who religiously did the Times crossword in a stupidly short amount of time. and i want to be able to at least do some!
Oh, and I have seen the cryptic crossword entry but not sure that would be a good place to discuss or not?

I would have said either use The Times crossword entry or start a new thread here in ask the community. I think the former would be more appropriate, but the latter would probably get you more answers.

I think that Ask H2G2 is as good a place as any...seeing some of the uses it's put to
I'm pretty good at cryptic crosswords (years of practice), so I'll help you out. I can usually finish The Times (sadly not in a stupidly short time). Daily Telegraph I can usually knock off in 15-20 minutes.

Why not post on the "Ask the H2G2 Community" or as a journal entry in you PS.
Is there a crossword club on site? I don't know, I've never looked.
Sorry I can't help more.

Sounds like a good idea Ictoan... have you opened one yet?
You can also get mensa books from the library if you are really interested in the lateral cryptic thinking way, and also on mensa websites...I keep trying at those and some I can do and others - well I just have to slap my forehead once I'm told the answer...
