There is a Musician's Guild and a Comedian's Guild, is there no Film Guild on the h2g2?

Us film buffs need a place to talk, as well. If there is no existing Film Guild, well... who's up for making one?

In addition to my desire to see a Film Guild, I am of the opinion that an A&E Guild (Arts & Entertainment Guild) would be a grand thing to have around here. It'd be good fun, and I imagine one could get a lot done with it.

Seriously, still not an edited entry on The Who? Tsk, tsk, tsk. smiley - winkeye

I've found Film Club was only partial success -- we usually just wind up talking about movies in our journals and misc chat. Maybe this thread can be kept going as a good movie thread.

It is a shame that we must resort to creating communities outside of h2g2 due to a lack of foresight on the BBC's part - I'm talking about not letting us post our own images, of course. Quite sad.

I'll give the film club a looksie. I'm hoping the chatter will be good - I believe the "agree to a movie and watch it!" would be great, but some people kind of have to be given a quick kick in the behind to get things done. It is unfortunate.

Thank you for your posts! Have you seen any good films lately?

Yes, I really enjoyed Cinderella Man. A film that manages to be both touching and quite thrilling. I enjoyed it all the more because I knew it was a true story -- that adds an edge you know. Russell Crowe is a great actor, even if he does throw telephones at people in real life!

Also loved Batman Begins. A very dark and intelligent version of Batman. Gotham City is cool looking (Chicago with CGI) Super cast includes people like Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, and Gary Oldman. Only weak actor was Katie Holmes. Christian Bale holds his own as Batman, did you see him in Equilibrium by any chance?

The 'Lets go see a film & discuss' idea's a good 'un. Might actually get me off my bum and the cinema. HJowever, we may need a different 'branch' for each country, as here in the UK we'll be waiting a couple of months for films already seen (and discussed - spoilers) in the USA.

On DVD I plan to watch House of Flying Daggers again. Chinese film with splendid splendid cinematography and stylized fight scenes. Not bloody like Kill Bill, just very cool.

Instead of a thread for seperate countries, what about two threads, one marked SEEN IT, and the other marked NO SPOILERS or something like that.

I loved Cinderella Man. It is geared to win Oscars, which means some of the more dramatic elements I could have done without, but it was a very well done movie over all. The true story aspect of it added a lot of edge to it, yes, but again, it was over dramatised at some points.

Russell Crowe once again proved, though, that he is my favorite actor in modern "Hollywood." Perhaps his temper is part of the reason he is so successful in his roles. When his parts call for an outburst, he can summon it; the rest of the time he gets to restrain himself and let it boil. It works out well, especially in Cinderella Man.

I enjoyed Batman Begins as well. Sort of. To a degree. I'm not a fan of the whole comic book craze, but I thought that Bale did a fantastic job (I love him as well!) as always, so did Freeman, Neeson, and, well, everyone involved! The only lacking part to me was Nolan's direction. I can even forgive Katie Holmes, if only because Michael Caine and Gary Oldman were in the film, as well. A man must have some eye candy to look at, and as sexy as Gary Oldman can be... smiley - winkeye

Equilibrium was one of my favorite movies of 2002. It is a shame that it got ignored as a Matrix rip-off when it is far superior! The action sequences and the dramatics were spot on, and man, Bale sure is dynamic.

You'll have to forgive me, I'm not used to just typing up small synopsises of the movies I watch. :D

For what it is worth, I watch a dozen plus movies a week, and I'd find it to be truly excellent to have "movie night's" where we all select one movie and watch it - be it old, new, or otherwise! I'm in my "classics" phase (I go through phases, hehe), so what era it hails from isn't a priority. I'm always up for suggestions, as well as dishing them out: I recently watched 'Quitting,' on suggestion from a friend, and it turned out to be a rather good introspective look at a Chinese's actors determination to shake the drugs he has become addicted to. Directed, written, and starred in by the actor who shook them. A good watch.

And that picture is hosted by the BBC. Foiled again!

If you liked 'House of Flying Daggers' you will probably like 'Shanghai Triad' and 'To Live,' both directed by Yimou Zhang. They are early-90s period pieces and boy do they ever shine. Noteworthy films in Chinese cinema because of 'To Live' having been banned due to its controversial political/social nature. They are important films, but where a lot of self-serving, important films fail, they succeed in being good films, too.

I was happy to see such a good director return to the screen... and how! Those fight sequences were great, and his cinematography is always very, very fluid and beautiful.

The Seen It/No Spoilers threads should work (they did for Dr Who, anyway).

I must confess to not having been to the cinema since H2G2. Shameful. I must address this very soon (still haven't seen Star Wars Ep 3, Batman Begins, WOTW etc).

Anyway, I have to go to work (tell me why I don't like Mondays...)

Yes, Equilibrium stayed at the theater only a few days, and it was so excellent! Very thought provoking.

I will try and post what movies I have in my Netflix Queue so if you want to watch one at the same time, we could. I watch a lot of movies too.

I recently saw a very unusual film called Chronos, made up entirely of time lapse photography of natural and man made monuments. It was beautiful, but the music lacked the intensity of Phillip Glass (who did Koyanisquatsi).

I've seen 2 of those. Shallow Grave is great, Super Size Me is unsettling. Both well worth watching.

War of the Worlds was pretty dang creepy. Great special effects and very good performance from little Dakota Fanning. I was planning to avoid this movie because I'm annoyed at Tom Cruise, but I'm glad I went anyway.

Saw a preview for a new thriller in which Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johanson play clones in a future society. It is called "The Island." Looks good.
