Proud, if there is one thing in this big old world that I done right it was giving birth to that boy. He's just a really nice person. Once in Greenwich Village in New York where he lived, a guy was sitting on Rick's door step yelling into a mobile phone. Rick asked him to stop shouting as his wife was in bed just above and she did shift work. The guy jumped up and smashed a beer bottle into Rick's head. When he was on the ground he started to kick and Rick thought it was the end.
A bloke walking past stopped to help Rick (thank God) and the restaurants and shops nearby closed so that people could go to the hospital with Rick and also go around the streets trying to find the crazy guy. The restaurants were full, it was late evening. It was New York but Rick is such a lovely person.

I went and looked Cate, he sounds great. Re the beating up incident, my brother went through a similar thing about 10 years ago one Christmas Eve, and I don't think its ever left me - you realise how precious they are eh!!

Bless your heart, 80s Whenever I hear of people fighting in the street or being beaten up I always think how vulnerable they are. This lad was high on drugs and had been drinking. I doubt if he even remembered doing it in the morning.

I have lived over here in the Caribbean island of St vincent for nearly a year, I lived here before for nearly three years. You hear of every single incident of violence and a lot of it over here is ugly.
People tend to chop each other with cutlasses or shoot each other, there is also a lot of domestic violence. The thing I am noticing more and more is that this violence is associated usually with alcohol. The drug of choice over here used to be weed but a lot of weed is being sold for cannabis and heroin.
I was told by a policeman that when weed is smoked or eaten the result is a person likely to talk or go to sleep. Rarely was violence associated with weed. UNLESS alcohol had been taken as well. These new drugs however are the cause of gangs, shootings, and underground crime

Blimey cookie!! I still think that it is people who are already violent who commit violence when drunk - it heightens their already violent nature. I just silly, chattier and then I go to sleep, lol.
The drug/alcahol combo though is something I have little experience of and seems to be something that's getting out of control.

Nice to see you ST. We were just talking about how the demon drink affects us. I totally agree 80s you have to be violent to be violent when you drink.
Do you think you speak the truth when you are drunk, are you the real you? Like you I am so talkative, but I can get argumentative I am told. I don't of course.

I was NOT havin a cup of tea - I dont like tea it was coffee and a baguette and please please I am going to work shortly and would like a nice calm evening if you could manage it cos I have books to read ( I wish ! )
I am shocked to hear that crime is rife where you are i thought life on the islands would be paradise without the worms seems like its a world thing then !!
Still on a purely pragmatic note it pays the bills if there were no criminals I wouldnt have a job would I and ST wouldnt be a hero !!
Speak later when I get there

You tend to let things out that you probably shouldn't when drunk IME...
Drugs / Alcohol - it is mostly the alcohol that makes one violent when on cannabis, but with the poor impulse control associated with the smoking of the dope...
The hard drugs are the dangerous ones - apart from the addictiveness, agression is almost always heightened in most people...

Hi JohnnyK, welcome back
This is all a little depressing - what shall we talk about that is less violent?
Any ideas?

Hi LJ - Favorite Terry Pratchett books, perhaps...mostly light-hearted, with the occasional serios point hidden in them ...

I can't join in on that one, although ST can if he's still around.
What else have you read that I might have done. Have you read the other Bill Bryson books?

I've read Michael Moore - it is really, really well written - I'm not sure about him quite so much - but as a writer of satire - he is pretty damned fine... get it - sell something - it's worth it...
