sounds a bit scientific to me!!
The best non-fiction I think I've read this year is Kate Fox's Watching the English - absolutely brilliantly funny - she's an anthropologist, but don't hold that against her - it is really clever and funny....

Gosh you have all been having a good time whilst I was on my way and such deep subjects too - as my son is a dj ( have I told you that lol ) one of the best books I have read about the dance scene is by Sheryl Garrett I cant remember the title but it was a revelation to me and of course talks about the drug culture in a sensible way

Yeh - though I prefer Bill Bryson, less biased.
80'sgirl (LJ) - Not really scientific - Sci-Fi / Contempory cyberpunk...

cookie and 80s
sorry to hear about your incidents re brother and son - horrific
its like part of life now
although i have joked about the incident outside here - i certainly dont think it was funny - a bloke who had a nice evening round the pubs was attacked for absolutely NO reason at all - by someone who was drunk and was looking for a victim for NO reason
someone wakes up in hospital with a badly smashed face having done nothing but be in the wrong place at the wrong time
and its geting worse
sorry rant over

I agree ST, I find it really difficult to be in city centres at night when it gets "like that". My brother was in a coma for about five weeks and has short term memory loss and no sense of smell bless him!!! Bit of a bugger that because he wanted to be a chef.
The guy involved got four years because he was under the "influence" of both drugs and drink, and was released after 2.5 years!! We never went to the trial or anything - didn't want to humanise the person by going...
, hey the good thing is both Cookie and I got our loved ones back more or less in one piece

ST - You don't *need* to read the books in any order, but it does help when you read books involving the A-M City Watch and the witches as developments in the characters over the series have changed them, most notably Sam Vimes (Started out as a drunkard in 'Guards, Guards' - now one of the most powerful men in A-M, with a young son at 50!)...It's a pity Rincewind mostly only gets walk on (or usually off !) parts nowadays, but there is only so much that can be thrown at him...

yes i was told they could be in any order - but i am trying just in case i miss any "character development" ie Light fantastic wouldnt have been quite as good without having read colour of magic
i have jumped ahead to read reaper man on a reccomendation- i just love them
they have Discworld conventions each year - looked them up on google - what a laugh - TP attends them all - dont think i could go quite that far though
cheers ST

Hi ST Everyone's still footie crazy here .Been reading the posts on here sounds like u were a real hero.
Cate's post on violence in st Vincent was really interesting. Here on Reunion I feel safe, but there's a lot of domestic violence and as on st vincent much of it is alcohol or "zamal"(weed) related. There's also a high level of incest and child abuse.
hope everyones ok
love eety

Soul Music is good - the introduction of Susan Death (his granndaughter) who ends up having to take over the job for a bit...
A good line - Sgt Colon & Nobby Nobbs are guarding the gates at Ankh Morpork and Susan rides in on Binky (I that name!!) and they let her through...Colon goes 'I wonder what his first name is...?', Nobby replies 'What? You mean like Keith Death or something?' ,and Colon answers 'No, I just got the funny feeling he's called *susan*' (Or words to that effect)...
Hogfather is funny and a little dark in places.
Thief of Time is funny, and gives chocholics everywhere the perfect excuse (It dosen't count if it's one you don't like !)...
